Li Auto puts 2nd batch of 6 supercharging stations into operation

Li Auto (NASDAQ: LI) is continuing to build out its charging system, bringing a second batch of supercharging stations into operation.

The automaker's six 4C supercharging stations went live today, and they're all located in highway service areas in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, Jinan, Shandong and Dongguan, Guangdong, it said today on Weibo.

Li Auto opened the first seven 4C supercharging stations for trial operation on April 20. As of now, the company's supercharging stations reach 13.

All of Li Auto's currently available models are extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), which are essentially plug-in hybrids.

The company unveiled its all-electric solution on April 18, the first day of the Shanghai auto show, which is based on an 800 V high-voltage platform capable of giving a battery electric vehicle (BEV) a 400 km range on a 10-minute charge.

By 2025, Li Auto's product array will include a super flagship model, five EREVs, and five BEVs, the company said.

Li Auto's first all-electric model will be the world's first to feature 's 4C Qilin Battery, it previously said.

C refers to the battery's charge multiplier, and 4C means that the pack could theoretically be fully charged in a quarter of an hour.

By the end of May, Li Auto's first 25 supercharging stations will open for trial operation and be available to all electric vehicle owners, it announced on April 18.

Each station will be equipped with three regular fast-charging piles and one 4C super-fast charging post, it said.

These 4C charging piles will have a maximum power of 480 kW and 2C charging piles will have a maximum power of 250 kW. 2C charging piles will allow vehicles to go from 20 percent to 80 percent in 30 minutes, the company said at the time.

By the end of this year, Li Auto will have built more than 300 supercharging stations along highways, it said.

By 2025, Li Auto will have 3,000 charging stations, covering 90 percent of China's highway miles and major cities, the company said.

Earlier today, NIO (NYSE: NIO) announced it had put eight new battery swap stations into operation, bringing the total to 1,403.

As of May 15, NIO also had 2,580 charging stations in China, offering 15,312 charging piles.

As of March 1, 's (NYSE: XPEV) charging network included 1,948 charging stations, of which 1,018 were operated by the company, according to the latest information on its website.

NIO exceeds 1,400 swap stations in China

NIO's 1,400th battery swap station in China was built with German retail giant METRO, and the two have built a total of 21 such facilities together to date.

NIO (NYSE: NIO) has surpassed 1,400 battery swap stations in China, as deployment of its third generation of the facility accelerates.

The electric vehicle (EV) maker today put eight new battery swap stations into operation, bringing the total to 1,403, with 374 of them located along highways, according to an article it posted today on the NIO App.

NIO's 1,400th battery swap station in China is located next to a store of German retail giant METRO in Shanghai, and is the 61st third-generation battery swap station of the EV maker.

The partnership between NIO and METRO began two years ago when the two signed a strategic cooperation agreement on March 29, 2021, to collaborate on the construction of charging stations and battery swap stations.

To date, 21 battery swap stations have been jointly built by the two companies, NIO said today.

NIO's owners have used battery swap services more than 22 million times, averaging nearly 50,000 times a day, and on average, a vehicle receives a fully charged battery from a battery swap station every 1.9 seconds, NIO said.

In addition to providing replenishment services, these battery swap stations have provided a total of 76,131 battery upgrades to owners, according to the article.

NIO allows owners to upgrade their standard-range battery packs to 100 kWh long range packs on a monthly, annual, or permanent basis.

On March 3, NIO began offering incentives to encourage owners to upgrade their battery packs to long-range ones.

At the NIO Day 2022 event on December 24, 2022, NIO's third-generation battery swap station was launched, capable of storing up to 21 packs, up from 13 in its previous generation and 5 in the first generation of that facility.

NIO announced plans at the time to add 400 battery swap stations in 2023, though that plan was raised to 1,000 on February 21.

William Li, NIO's founder, chairman and CEO, said at the time that the company would further accelerate the deployment of battery swap stations, with a goal of having more than 2,300 battery swap stations in China by the end of 2023.

NIO's first 10 third-generation battery swap stations went live in 10 Chinese cities on April 12.

On April 18, Li said on the first day of the Shanghai auto show that NIO will add about 200 battery swap stations every month starting in June.

As of May 15, NIO also had 2,580 charging stations in China, offering 15,312 charging piles. The company's charging map has access to more than 7,000,000 third-party charging stations.

Eve Energy to buy land for battery plant in Malaysia

Chinese lithium battery maker Eve Energy will build a new battery factory in Malaysia, just days after announcing it would build a plant in Hungary.

Eve Energy Malaysia, the Malaysian arm of Eve Energy, signed a memorandum of understanding with Pemaju Kelang Lama Sdn Bhd (PKL) on May 12 to buy land from the latter to set up a lithium battery manufacturing plant in Malaysia, according to a stock exchange announcement.

The land is 66.58083 acres (26.9 hectares) and the price is 164 million ringgit ($36.6 million), according to the May 12 announcement.

The signing of the MOU marks the effective advancement of Eve Energy's cylindrical lithium battery manufacturing project, which will further meet the company's need to scale up its cylindrical battery capacity, the announcement said.

The battery plant will support electric two-wheeler and power tool manufacturers in Malaysia and Southeast Asia, and continue to consolidate and enhance the company's presence in these areas, Eve Energy said.

Eve Energy, one of the world's largest power battery manufacturers, installed 2.4 GWh of batteries worldwide in the first quarter, up 75.5 percent year-on-year, according to data released by South Korean market research firm SNE Research on May 3.

This puts Eve Energy in 9th place globally with a 1.8 percent share, while and BYD are the top two with 35.0 percent and 16.2 percent shares, respectively.

The announcement comes two days after Eve Energy announced on May 10 that its subsidiary EVE Power Hungary had signed an agreement with Debreceni, a subsidiary of the Hungarian government of Debrecen, to purchase land owned by the latter in the city's northwest industrial zone for the production of cylindrical power cells.

The land in Hungary covers 45 hectares and the purchase price is 22.5 euros per square meter plus VAT, for a total price of about 12.86 million euros ($14.1 million).

The deal will meet the company's need for production land for future growth and further expand its capacity for power and energy storage batteries, Eve Energy said at the time.

Eve Energy's announcement provided no further information, though the move appears to be in preparation for supplying BMW.

BYD to supply batteries to China’s largest diesel engine maker

BYD and Weichai Power will build a power battery development and manufacturing base in Shandong province, where the latter is headquartered.

BYD (OTCMKTS: BYDDY), one of the world's largest manufacturers of power batteries, is expanding its customer base.

BYD and Weichai Power, China's largest diesel engine maker, signed a strategic cooperation agreement in Shenzhen on May 12 to collaborate on the joint production of power batteries, according to a post by the latter on Weibo.

Tan Xuguang, chairman and CEO of Weichai, and Wang Chuanfu, chairman and president of BYD, attended the signing ceremony, according to the article.

The two sides will produce power batteries in a joint venture in Shandong to build a power battery R&D and manufacturing base to promote the development of new energy commercial vehicles in China, the article said, without providing further details.

Weichai, based in Weifang, Shandong province, posted revenue of RMB 53.4 billion ($7.67 billion) and net profit of RMB 1.86 billion in the first quarter, according to its financial report.

Weichai began its involvement in the new energy business in 2010, especially in the fuel cell sector.

The company has a new energy engine base in Weifang, and its chairman, Tan, is also chairman of Sinotruk, which has a new energy heavy truck manufacturing base in Jinan.

BYD is the world's largest maker of new energy vehicles (NEVs) and the world's second-largest maker of power batteries.

BYD installed 21.5 GWh of power batteries in the first quarter, ranking second globally with a 16.2 percent share, behind 's 35.0 percent, according to data released earlier this month by South Korean market research firm SNE Research.

In China, BYD installed 7.32 GWh of power batteries in April, ranking second with a 29.11 percent share, according to the China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance (CABIA). CATL ranked first in China with a 40.83 percent share in April.

In Shandong, where Weichai is headquartered, BYD has a car assembly plant, a power battery factory and a chip factory.

Neta Auto, the electric vehicle (EV) brand of Hozon Auto, has begun deliveries of its electric sports car Neta GT, less than a month after the model's official launch, to capitalize on the initial hype.

Neta held a delivery ceremony in Shanghai on May 13 to deliver the first Neta GT EVs to owners, it announced on May 14.

Notably, the two-door, four-seat Neta GT electric sports car was only officially launched on the first day of the Shanghai auto show on April 18, with starting prices of RMB 178,800 ($25,700) to 227,800.

Neta's move to have the Neta GT begin deliveries within a month of its launch demonstrates the desire of EV makers to capture initial consumer enthusiasm and avoid losing potential orders in the increasingly competitive Chinese EV market.

The fact that Neta GT deliveries began shortly after launch validates the company's comprehensive strengths in vehicle development and design, manufacturing, and channel building, Neta said.

Neta has been seen as a budget EV maker since its inception, as its vehicles are priced primarily at the lower end of the market, with previous mainstay models Neta V and Neta U priced at around RMB 100,000 to RMB 150,000 in China.

The Neta S is Neta's first effort in the high-end market, priced at around RMB 300,000, and the launch of the Neta GT is expected to further start changing the brand's low-end perception among consumers.

The Neta GT is Neta's second model based on the Shanhai platform after the flagship sedan Neta S. It measures 4,715 mm in length, 1,979 mm in width and 1,415 mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,770 mm.

The Neta GT is available in single-motor and dual-motor versions, with the single-motor version having a maximum motor power of 170 kW and the dual-motor version having a maximum total power of 340 kW.

The car's battery pack is available in three options -- 64.24 kWh, 74.48 kWh and 77.9 kWh -- and the CLTC range includes three versions -- 560 km, 580 km and 660 km.

In addition to the Neta GT, Neta also gave a debut to a model called Neta GT Speedster, a convertible based on the Neta GT, at the Shanghai auto show.

More images of the NIO (NYSE: NIO) ET5 touring have been revealed, as the model gets closer to its official launch.

Auto blogger Delu shared several images of the model on the NIO App today, saying that NIO is filming promotional videos for the model in Norway.

"This is one of the top three touring models in my mind, they are the Volvo V60, Audi RS6 and now the ET5 Touring," the blogger wrote.

On May 9, CnEVPost obtained two spy photos of the ET5 touring appearing on the streets of Europe, showing that the car has the yellow color exclusive to the ET5 sedan sold in China.

CnEVPost has learned from a source is that the model is expected to make its official debut in Europe in June.

In January, NIO co-founder and president Qin Lihong said the company would launch the ET5 touring, a sister model of the ET5, in June or July.

That new variant of the ET5 will debut in Europe, where the model was developed primarily for European consumers, Qin said at the time.

Such models have a large market in Europe, while sales of sedans are low, which is the opposite of the situation in China, Qin said at the January event.

"Derivatives of sedans are a niche market in China, but the opposite is true in Europe. We don't see many real sedans in Europe," he said at the time.

In early March, the ET5 touring appeared on a filing list from Chinese industry regulators and its key specifications were revealed.

The NIO ET5 touring has a length, width and height of 4,790 mm, 1,960 mm and 1,499 mm respectively, and a wheelbase of 2,888 mm, in line with the ET5 sedan.

It will be equipped with dual motors produced by NIO's electric drive systems division in Hefei, Anhui province, with a maximum power of 150 kW and 210 kW, respectively, and can support a top speed of 200 km/h.

As with several other NIO models based on the NT 2.0 platform, the NIO ET5 touring supports the option of a retractable electric tow hook, which can tow a maximum of 1,400 kg of caravan weight.

Hesai Group has opened its first European office in Stuttgart, Germany, which will help it expand further into the European market and accelerate its globalization, the Chinese LiDAR manufacturer announced today.

Stuttgart is the automotive capital of Europe, with more than 2,000 companies in the automotive chain and many top OEMs and large Tier 1 suppliers headquartered here, Hesai said.

More than 20 automotive industry-related universities and R&D institutions provide a large talent base for the automotive industry in the region, it said.

Hesai's European office will leverage local resources in automotive and component manufacturing to enhance the company's presence and overall competitiveness in the European market, Hesai said.

The company received the TISAX AL3 assessment label, the highest level of information security, this year, passing the European automotive supply chain access requirements and being able to serve European car OEM customers, it said.

Founded in Shanghai in late 2014, Hesai initially focused on developing high-performance laser sensors and has been exploring LiDAR products since 2016.

Hesai opened an office in Palo Alto, Silicon Valley, at its inception and now operates in more than 40 countries and 90 cities worldwide.

The company went public on NASDAQ on February 9, becoming the first Chinese LiDAR manufacturer to go public in the US.

Hesai shipped 47,515 LiDAR units in the fourth quarter, up 739.2 percent from 5,662 units in the same period in 2021, it said in its earnings report on March 16.

The company shipped 80,462 LiDARs for the full year 2022, up 467.5 percent year-on-year.

Hesai's revenue in overseas markets over the past three years reached nearly RMB 1.19 billion ($170 million), accounting for more than half of the company's total revenue.

Neta Auto, the electric vehicle (EV) brand of Hozon Auto, has entered Malaysia as it ramps up its efforts to expand into the Southeast Asian EV market.

Neta recently officially launched the right-hand drive version of its compact SUV Neta V for local consumers at Malaysia's largest auto show, according to a press release from the company yesterday.

Several Malaysian government officials attended the Neta V launch, according to Neta, whose press release did not announce a local price or expected delivery schedule for the model.

Neta has been seen as a budget EV maker since its inception, as its vehicles are priced primarily for the lower-end market.

The Neta V and Neta U are priced in China at around 100,000 yuan ($14,390) to 150,000 yuan. The company is looking to enter the higher end of the market in China with the higher-priced Neta S flagship sedan.

Prior to entering Malaysia, Neta's efforts in Southeast Asia were focused on Thailand.

On August 24, 2022, the right-hand drive version of the Neta V was launched in Thailand, its first model offered there.

On March 10 this year, Neta laid the foundation stone for its plant in Bangkok, Thailand, which will be its main manufacturing base for building right-hand-drive EVs for export to ASEAN.

The plant, Neta's first overseas plant, will have a capacity of 20,000 units/year when completed and is expected to be operational by the end of January 2024.

Neta plans to expand its overseas business to more regions such as the Middle East and the European Union, making it a brand recognized and trusted by consumers around the world, said Zhang Yong, co-founder and CEO of the company, at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Thai plant.

To date, Neta already has a European division, a Thai subsidiary and has launched three products for overseas markets, including the Neta V right-hand drive version, it said in the press release yesterday.

Neta delivered 11,080 vehicles in April, which was up 25.72 percent from 8,813 units in the same month last year and up 9.84 percent from 10,087 units in March, the company announced on May 1.

The flagship Neta S delivered 2,237 units in April, up 1.41 percent from 2,206 units in March, according to the company.

Neta has a sales target of 300,000 units in 2023, local media China Securities Journal reported on February 7.

The EV maker sold 152,073 units in 2022, up 118 percent year-on-year, including 3,456 units delivered overseas, according to data it previously announced.

BYD’s Tesla FSD-like feature said to be available in Q3

BYD (OTCMKTS: BYDDY) is a rare exception in China's electric vehicle (EV) space, not marketing its assisted driving capabilities much.

While this seems to have had no impact on its sales, it has left some with the impression that it lags behind in smart driving technology.

Now, a new report said BYD actually has technology built up in this area and will launch a feature similar to 's FSD (Full Self-Driving) later this year.

BYD's advanced driver-assistance system will be available on the new Han sedan in the third quarter, giving the model the ability of pilot-assisted driving on the highway, local auto media HiEV said in a report today.

BYD's system is called DNP, and after the Han, it will also be available for some models of the Tang and Song of the Dynasty series, according to the report.

In addition to these models, BYD's higher-positioned brands including Denza, F brand and Yangwang will also be equipped with advanced smart driving features, the report said.

The first BYD advanced assisted driving solution available for Han models will be based on the Journey 5 chip from local chipmaker Horizon Robotics, according to the report.

Horizon Robotics is a leading provider of intelligent driving system solutions in China, and is using its chips in some of its models, and use Nvidia chips in others.

Some models of BYD's Dynasty and Ocean series will also use the Nvidia DRIVE Orin computing platform to create assisted driving systems, the HiEV report noted.

On March 23, BYD announced a partnership with Nvidia on smart driving technology to equip some of its NEVs with the Nvidia DRIVE Hyperion platform for smart driving and smart parking of vehicles starting in the first half of 2023, as previously reported by CnEVPost.

Notably, on December 27 last year, BYD announced that it had established a joint venture with autonomous driving unicorn Momenta, officially kicking off a long-term partnership between the two companies to develop high-level intelligent driving technology.

Momenta, an industry-leading autonomous driving company, will further boost BYD's rapid breakthrough and mass production in the field of intelligent driving, BYD's announcement at the time said.

The high trim version of Denza N7 is equipped with city pilot assisted driving function, with 2 RoboSense LiDARs and an Nvidia Orin X chip, with some of the system's algorithms provided by Momenta, according to HiEV's report today.

The Denza N7 will have basic L2 assisted driving features when it goes on sale in June, with other more advanced features to be released later, the report said, citing a Denza insider.

For the Yangwang brand, which is positioned above Denza, its first model, the U8, is equipped with three LiDARs, while the autonomous driving computing platform uses an Nvidia Orin chip, according to the report.

The Yangwang U8 is priced similarly to the Lotus Eletre with its smart driving solution, and both will have highway as well as city road pilot-assisted driving capabilities, the report said.

Earlier today, another local media outlet, 36kr, reported that BYD's smart driving R&D system is rapidly adjusting and the company is planning to conduct its own smart driving chip design.

While BYD's existing models are currently largely dependent on solutions from external suppliers, including Baidu, Huawei and Momenta, the NEV maker is already accelerating its focus on smart driving, the 36kr report said.

In the LFP battery market, BYD regained the top spot with a 42.68 percent share by overtaking CATL with 7.31 GWh installed in April.

CATL installed 5.76 GWh in the LFP battery market in April, ranking second with a 33.65 percent share.

In March, CATL's share of the LFP market was 39.47, higher than BYD's 38.88 percent, the first time it has overtaken BYD in this market during the year.

Eve Energy and Gotion High-tech ranked third and fourth in the LFP battery market with 7.01 percent and 6.17 percent share, respectively.
