NIO website shows countdown as ET5 Touring launch less than 8 hours away

Deliveries of the ET5 Touring in China will begin tomorrow, and management expects the model to enhance its competitiveness in the premium family car market.

NIO (NYSE: NIO) will hold a launch event for the ET5 Touring starting today at 19:00 Beijing time (7:00 am US Eastern time), and its official website is showing a countdown.

As of press time, the launch of the NIO ET5 Touring in China, themed "Journey Ahead," has 7 hours and 43 minutes to go. The delivery of the model in China will officially start tomorrow.

NIO's English website is also showing a countdown to the European launch event with the theme "Inspired By Life", which will start in 13 hours and 43 minutes.

The ET5 Touring will be the first NIO model to be launched at a global launch event. The company will hold the European launch of the model on June 16 at 1:00 am Beijing time (June 15 at 1:00 pm US Eastern time).

The ET5 Touring launch will be an event across six countries, NIO announced on June 10, when a post on the NIO App hinted that the model would be released to consumers in China, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Germany.

Below is a video posted today by the NIO App of the ET5 Touring on a track drive in Germany.

NIO began accepting pre-orders for the ET5 Touring in China on June 10, although the model's specifications and price have not yet been announced.

For the ET5 Touring, many expect that its starting price in China, including the battery, will likely be 10,000 yuan ($1,400) to 20,000 yuan higher than that of the regular ET5.

NIO lowered the starting prices for all models by RMB 30,000 on June 12 and made the battery swap service, which was previously free several times a month, a paid option.

Under the latest pricing system, the starting price for the regular ET5, including the battery, is reduced to RMB 298,000. If consumers choose to lease the battery using the BaaS (battery as a service) program, then the starting price of the vehicle is RMB 228,000.

On March 9, the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) announced the latest batch of models that will be allowed to be sold in China, and the NIO ET5 Touring was included in the list.

The model has a length, width and height of 4,790 mm, 1,960 mm and 1,499 mm respectively, and a wheelbase of 2,888 mm, in line with the ET5 sedan, according to the filing information.

It is equipped with dual motors produced by NIO's electric drive systems division in Hefei, Anhui province, with a maximum power of 150 kW and 210 kW, respectively, and can support a top speed of 200 km/h.

As with several other NIO models based on the NT 2.0 platform, the NIO ET5 Touring supports the option of a retractable electric tow hook, which can tow a maximum of 1,400 kg of caravan weight.

The model's battery supplier includes CALB in addition to , as do the new EC6, EC7, new ES8 and new ES6.

The ET5 Touring can meet the diverse use scenarios of individual and family users, greatly enhancing the company's competitiveness in the high-end family car market, William Li, founder, chairman and CEO of NIO, said during a June 9 analyst call following the company's first-quarter earnings announcement.

Store visit: First impression of NIO ET5 Touring before official launch

The ET5 Touring offers more trunk space while improving the high driver's seat that the regular ET5 was complained about. The key now is the price.

NIO (NYSE: NIO) will hold a launch event for the ET5 Touring starting at 19:00 Beijing time on June 15, and the model is already allowing visitors to experience it in its stores before then.

As of June 10, the ET5 Touring show cars are available at 248 NIO stores in 48 cities across China. In Shanghai, where NIO's global headquarters is located, the model is already available at 10 NIO Houses and 15 NIO Spaces.

I went to one of the NIO Houses in Shanghai's Pudong New Area on Sunday, June 11 at around 9 am to check out the model and left at around 10 am.

The store is located in a large shopping district and the office hour start time was 10:00 am. Even though I visited before then, the store staff allowed me to enter.

NIO is one of the strongest local car companies in terms of abilities to build beautiful models, and the ET5 Touring is clearly another well-designed one.

It's worth noting that photos of a car give a very different feeling than seeing it in person, and this applies to all models of all brands.

The gray ET5 Touring in the NIO House I visited has very natural body lines. In fact, a non-offensive exterior design is already the basis for a car that is acceptable to most people.

I don't want to discuss too much about its appearance, but you can get a general impression through the pictures in this article.

It should be noted that just a few years ago, for the average Chinese consumer, family cars consisted only of sedans and SUVs, and derivatives of sedans were not considered. You also hardly ever saw a gasoline-powered touring or shooting brake model on the streets of Shanghai.

's premium electric vehicle subsidiary is the first of the local brands to try to tap into the sedan derivative market, announcing the all-electric Zeekr 001 shooting brake on April 15, 2021, with deliveries starting in October 2021.

The Zeekr 001 is Zeekr's first model, and it is a brave move to target an unproven market. The model delivered 11,337 units last December, bringing full-year 2022 deliveries to 71,941 vehicles.

The ET5 Touring, a derivative of the regular ET5 sedan, is equipped with the same powerful assisted driving hardware as NIO's other NT 2.0 platform-based models, including a roof-mounted LiDAR, and four NVIDIA Orin SoCs capable of delivering a total of more than 1,000 TOPS of performance.

One of the biggest attractions of the ET5 Touring compared to the regular ET5 is the larger trunk space. Such models give consumers the same driving experience as a sedan while gaining load capacity close to that of an SUV.

The ET5 Touring is not yet available for test drives, and NIO will officially launch the model on June 15, with test drives available on that day.

For the regular ET5, many owners have complained about the high seating position in the driver's seat, which may be a deterrent for some potential customers to choose this model.

I got into the driver's seat of the regular ET5 at that NIO House and found that this issue was indeed apparent, especially when compared to my own Model 3 Long Rang, a 2020 purchase.

The regular ET5 feels very much like the driver is sitting in an SUV, even with the seat position cranked all the way down. For the Model 3, on the other hand, the appropriate seating position for me is with the seat height cranked to the middle gear.

NIO has obviously learned this lesson from the regular ET5, and the ET5 Touring driver's seat has a significantly lower seating position. The feeling of sitting in the ET5 Touring driver's seat is almost the same as when I drove my own Model 3.

The ET5 sedan seems to have been experiencing demand issues after China's purchase subsidies for new energy vehicles (NEVs) expired at the end of last year, and the price will be critical for the ET5 Touring to make the ET5 family shine again.

Earlier today, NIO announced an RMB 30,000 ($4,200) price cut for the entire new model lineup, effective immediately, but the previously free battery swap service several times a month has become a paid option.

Under the latest pricing system, the starting price of the ET5, including the battery, is reduced to RMB 298,000. If consumers choose to lease the battery using the BaaS (battery as a service) option, the starting price of the vehicle is RMB 228,000.

For the ET5 Touring, many expect that its starting price in China, including the battery, will likely be RMB 10,000 to 20,000 higher than the regular ET5.

In addition to targeting the new sedan derivative market in China, NIO also hopes to sell the ET5 Touring in Europe, where such models have a higher acceptance.

A few hours after the ET5 Touring's China launch, NIO will hold a European launch event on June 16 at 1:00 am Beijing time (June 15 at 1:00 pm US Eastern time) to launch the ET5 Touring, as well as the EL6, known as the ES6 in China.

NIO to launch ET5 Touring and ES6 in Europe on Jun 15

The ES6 is called the EL6 in Europe because of Audi's trademark lawsuit.

(NYSE: NIO) said yesterday that it would launch new "models" in Europe on June 15, but didn't specify which ones. Now the answer has been revealed.

"We are revealing our new NIO models, the ET5 Touring and the EL6, on 15.06.2023, 19:00 CEST in a global online launch event and you are invited!" the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker tweeted today.

The ET5 Touring will be NIO's first new model to be launched simultaneously in the global market, and its Chinese launch will start at 19:00 Beijing time (7:00 am US Eastern time) on June 15, a few hours before the European launch.

That European launch event starts at 1:00 pm US Eastern time on June 15, or 1:00 am Beijing time on June 16.

The EL6 is the SUV known in China as the ES6, which is using a new name in Europe because of the Audi lawsuit. Audi believes NIO's ES8 and ES6 infringe on its trademark rights for its S8 and S6 models.

NIO last held a launch event in Europe on October 8, 2022, when the company introduced the ET7, EL7 and ET5 to European consumers. The EL7 is the ES7 sold in China.

The company launched the new ES6 in China on May 24, and its deliveries began the night of the launch.

Earlier today, a message posted by NIO on its mobile app hinted that the ET5 Touring will be released for consumers in China, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Germany.

The ET5 Touring show car and vehicles for test drives have recently arrived at NIO stores, and test drives will be available on June 15, it said.

NIO began accepting pre-orders for the ET5 Touring in China today, although the model's specifications and price have not yet been announced. Its delivery will begin on June 16, NIO said.

The production team of British automotive media Top Gear will be involved in the ET5 Touring launch event, according to information shared by the NIO App today.

As of today, the ET5 Touring show cars are available at 248 NIO stores in 48 cities across China.

NIO's stores include the flagship NIO Houses as well as the smaller NIO Spaces, and as of May 30, they numbered 118 and 269 in China, respectively, according to data it released on June 1.

NIO to launch ET5 Touring on Jun 15, delivery in China to start next day

The launch event of the ET5 Touring will start at 19:00 Beijing time on June 15. Show cars are already available in stores and deliveries in China will start on June 16.

NIO (NYSE: NIO) will officially launch the ET5 Touring next Thursday, and like the new ES6, which just went on sale late last month, deliveries of the new model will begin the day after the launch.

The launch of the ET5 Touring will begin at 19:00 Beijing time (7:00 am US Eastern time) on June 15, and it will be a launch event that will span six countries, NIO announced today.

The NIO App release implies that the ET5 Touring will be launched for consumers in China, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Germany.

NIO is accepting pre-orders for the ET5 Touring from consumers in China starting today, although the model's specifications and pricing have not yet been announced.

The ET5 Touring is expected to cost RMB 335,000 ($47,000) - RMB 345,000, which will be slightly higher than the regular ET5's RMB 328,000, according to a June 5 research note by Deutsche Bank analyst Edison Yu's team.

Consumers who pre-order the model now will need to pay RMB 5,000 and they will receive 10,000 NIO Credits, worth RMB 1,000, after locking in their orders.

The offer will no longer be available after the ET5 Touring begins allowing consumers to lock in their orders.

Deliveries of the ET5 Touring will begin June 16 in China, roughly in accordance with consumers' order lock-in schedule, NIO said.

The model's show cars and vehicles for test drives have recently arrived at NIO stores, and test drives will be available on June 15, it said.

In an announcement announcing May delivery figures on June 1, NIO said it plans to launch a new NT 2.0-based model, the ET5 Touring, which will be available for delivery to customers starting in June.

The ET5 Touring will be launched globally in June and start its delivery with the Chinese market, it said at the time in a separate press release.

NIO will launch the ET5 Touring on June 15 and will begin its deliveries this month, William Li, founder, chairman and CEO of NIO, said yesterday during an analyst call following the company's first-quarter earnings announcement.

The ET5 Touring can meet the diverse usage scenarios of individual and family users, greatly enhancing the company's competitiveness in the high-end family car market, he said.

The production team of British automotive media Top Gear will participate in the ET5 Touring launch event, according to information shared by the NIO App today.

Notably, an image on NIO's English website yesterday hinted that the company will launch new models in Europe next week, possibly more than just the ET5 Touring.

"Brand new NIO models are coming. June 15, 19:00 CEST," reads the text of an image on the front page of NIO's English website.

The start time of the European event corresponds to June 15 at 1:00 pm US Eastern time, or June 16 at 1:00 am Beijing time.

NIO offers new options for ET5, ES7 and new ES8

ET5 and ES7 add gold exterior option, ET5, ES7 and new ES8 all add front wiper defrost feature.

NIO (NYSE: NIO) today began offering more options for three models in an attempt to increase their appeal.

Both the ET5 sedan and ES7 SUV are adding a gold exterior option effective immediately, with the option both priced at RMB 10,000 ($1,400), according to an article posted today by the NIO App.

ET5, ES7 and the new ES8 all have a new front wiper defrost function, all priced at RMB 1,000.

In cold weather, the front wiper defrost feature helps the wipers return to normal operation more quickly to clear snow and maintain clear visibility, the article said.

Vehicles with the optional front wiper defrost feature will receive an OTA update to get the software that works with it.

NIO has also updated the ET5 with optional wheel and tire combinations. The 19-inch five-spoke wheels are standard on the model, while other options are available for a fee ranging from RMB 3,500 to RMB 9,500.

The NIO ET5 was launched on NIO Day 2021 in December 2021, with the first delivery on September 30, 2022.

NIO ES7 was launched on June 15, 2022, with the first delivery on August 28, 2022.

The new ES8 was launched on NIO Day 2022, December 24, 2022, with deliveries to begin later this month.

NIO will report first-quarter earnings later today and hold an analyst call afterward.

The company delivered 31,041 vehicles in the first quarter, slightly above the lower end of its guidance range of 31,000 to 33,000 vehicles.

ET5 Touring said to be available at NIO showrooms in China starting Jun 10

The ET5 Touring has arrived at stores and will be available in NIO showrooms on the evening of June 9, and those interested can check it out on June 10, according to a blogger who has been following NIO for a long time.

The ET5 Touring, a derivative of NIO's (NYSE: NIO) ET5 sedan, hasn't been officially launched yet, but it's no longer a secret.

The ET5 Touring has quietly arrived in NIO stores, longtime NIO follower and car blogger @肉肉爸比ev said on Weibo today.

The model will enter NIO's showrooms on the evening of June 9 and those interested can check it out on June 10, the blogger said, without providing any more information.

Notably, NIO has not yet announced an official launch date for the ET5 Touring, and the electric vehicle (EV) maker will announce first-quarter earnings before the US stock market opens on June 9 and then hold an analyst call.

On June 2, car blogger Wu Ying, who has about 1 million followers on Weibo, said the ET5 Touring will be launched on June 15.

On June 5, the first slide on the front page of NIO's English website showed a picture of part of the interior details of a model, with the text "Inspired By Life."

The date on the image implies that the event will take place on June 15.

The information on NIO's website does not suggest that the model is the ET5 Touring, but the image shows that it does not appear to have a HUD (heads-up display), and the ET5 is currently the only one in NIO's product lineup that does not support HUD.

NIO plans to launch a new model based on NT 2.0, the ET5 Touring, a midsize smart electric wagon that will begin deliveries to customers in June, it said when it announced May deliveries on June 1.

The ET5 Touring will be launched globally in June and deliveries will begin in China, it said in a separate press release.

For the ET5 Touring, Deutsche Bank analyst Edison Yu's team expects pricing of RMB 335,000 ($47,030) - RMB 345,000, which would be slightly higher than the regular ET5's RMB 328,000.

NIO management aims to capitalize on the success of the 001, which proves there is a sizable local market for luxury sport EV wagons, the team said in a research note sent to investors on June 5.

The ET5 Touring has been seen frequently in Europe as well as China over the past two months.

NIO ET5 touring spotted in real life in China uncamouflaged

The NIO ET5 touring with a green exterior is seen for the first time. Yellow and blue versions of the model have already been seen in Europe, while the black version appeared in a regulatory filing in China.

The NIO ET5 touring is on the streets of China without camouflage, after the model was seen in Europe in recent days.

A WeChat user shared three images of the NIO ET5 touring without camouflage in a group chat where CnEVPost is present, showing a green version of the model.

This is the first time the NIO ET5 touring with a green exterior has been seen. Yellow and blue versions of the model have already been seen in Europe, while the black version appeared in a regulatory filing in China.

It is not clear in which Chinese city the NIO ET5 touring was photographed, and the temporary number plate affixed to its rear window is illegible.

On March 9, China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology announced the latest batch of models that will be allowed to be sold in China, and the NIO ET5 touring was included.

The model in the catalog was in black exterior and has a length, width and height of 4,790 mm, 1,960 mm and 1,499 mm, respectively, and a wheelbase of 2,888 mm, in line with the regular ET5 sedan.

The NIO ET5 touring is equipped with dual motors produced by NIO's electric drive systems division in Hefei, Anhui province, with a maximum power of 150 kW and 210 kW, respectively, and can support a top speed of 200 km/h.

On May 9, CnEVPost obtained two spy shots of the NIO ET5 touring, showing the model on the streets of Europe, with the yellow color exclusive to the ET5 sedan sold in China.

On May 12, auto blogger Delu shared multiple images of a blue NIO ET5 touring on the NIO App, saying that NIO was filming a promotional video for the model in Norway.

The NIO ET5 touring is expected to make its official debut in Europe in June, with the launch in China likely to come a little later.

NIO co-founder and president Qin Lihong said in January that this variant of the ET5 would debut in Europe, where the model was developed primarily for European consumers.

Derivatives of sedans have been a niche market in China, and few car companies have tried to tap into it before.

's electric vehicle (EV) brand unveiled its first model, the Zeekr 001, on April 15, 2021, the first such model released by a local brand, with deliveries starting in October 2021.

The Zeekr 001 was an unexpected success in China, with 71,941 units delivered in the full year 2022.

Zeekr positions the Zeekr 001 as a shooting brake sedan, while NIO emphasizes that this NIO ET5 variant is a touring model.

Auto blogger Delu shared several images of the model on the NIO App today, saying that NIO is filming promotional videos for the model in Norway.

CnEVPost has learned from a source is that the model is expected to make its official debut in Europe in June.

In January, NIO co-founder and president Qin Lihong said the company would launch the ET5 touring, a sister model of the ET5, in June or July.

That new variant of the ET5 will debut in Europe, where the model was developed primarily for European consumers, Qin said at the time.

Such models have a large market in Europe, while sales of sedans are low, which is the opposite of the situation in China, Qin said at the January event.

"Derivatives of sedans are a niche market in China, but the opposite is true in Europe. We don't see many real sedans in Europe," he said at the time.

In early March, the ET5 touring appeared on a filing list from Chinese industry regulators and its key specifications were revealed.
