CPCA expects China’s Mar NEV retail sales to rise 27.5% from Feb to 560,000 units

The overall market is recovering at a slower pace than previously expected due to increased consumer wait-and-see sentiment caused by big price cuts, the CPCA said.

The China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) expects China's new energy vehicle (NEV) sales to continue to recover this month from last month, although growth in the overall passenger car market remains slow.

Retail sales of passenger vehicles in China are expected to be 1.59 million units in March, flat from a year ago and up 14.5 percent from February, the CPCA said in a report late last night.

Among them, retail sales of NEVs are expected to be 560,000 units, up 25.8 percent from a year ago and up 27.5 percent from February, with a penetration rate of 35.2 percent, according to the report.

In mid-March, the overall market discount rate for passenger cars in China was about 14.4 percent, up from 13.9 percent at the end of February, indicating intense price competition in sales channels, the report said.

The Chinese car market performed poorly in January-February amid multiple unfavorable factors, and demand began to be released in March, the CPCA said.

However, the overall market recovered at a slower pace than previously expected due to increased consumer wait-and-see sentiment caused by car companies' price-cut marketing, the report said.

Large discounts offered by car companies in Hubei province in early March attracted a lot of consumer attention, but at the same time led to a wait-and-see mood among consumers in other provinces and cities, the CPCA said.

Other local governments have since introduced subsidy policies and car brands have followed suit with promotions, which have boosted store traffic but limited actual order conversion, the CPCA said.

Consumer wait-and-see sentiment further increased, negatively impacting the auto market, the report said.

Average daily retail sales for major Chinese automakers in the first and second weeks of March were 31,500 and 36,700, down 16 percent and 18 percent year-on-year, respectively, according to the report.

Average daily retail sales in the third week are expected to be 40,800, up 10 percent year-on-year, mainly due to a low base from last year as a result of the Covid outbreak in the same period last year.

Considering the upward pulse of car sales at the end of the quarter and promotional policies in some regions, the auto market is expected to maintain its rebound in the fourth and fifth weeks, the CPCA said.

The CPCA usually releases estimates of passenger vehicle sales at the end of the month, with preliminary data released early the following month, followed by final data.

It estimated February NEV retail sales in China at around 400,000 units on February 22, released a preliminary figure of 438,000 units on March 7, and released a final figure of 439,000 units on March 8.

The past week has seen a rare price war in China's auto industry involving not only NEV makers, but traditional internal combustion engine automakers as well.

Rumors surfaced last week that BMW dealers were offering a massive subsidy for the all-electric BMW i3 in China, and that consumers who pay full price for the car can even get the model for RMB 120,000 to 180,000, less than half the retail price.

BMW insiders denied this, but sources at BMW dealers said they are indeed offering discounts, and that these measures were only introduced this month, local media Cailian reported last week.

For the BMW i3 eDrive35 L, which currently has a guide price of RMB 353,900, the price after discounts is RMB 248,000, the report said, citing BMW dealership sources.

Consumers will also receive an additional RMB 6,000 subsidy if they trade in their vehicles, the source said.

The increasing number of car companies joining the price war has led to increased consumer wait-and-see sentiment to avoid seeing price reductions shortly after purchasing a car.

Li Auto has introduced a consumer purchase price protection benefit that covers all of the company's currently available models -- Li L7, Li L8, Li L9.

For consumers who purchase these models, if the prices drops within 90 days of their order, then Li Auto will refund the difference.

The policy, which is available to consumers when they purchase the Li L7, Li L8, and Li L9, is primarily intended to make clear to them that Li Auto will not drop the prices, local media outlet The Paper said earlier today, citing salespeople from the company.

China NEV sales at 525,000 units in Feb, up 28.7% from Jan, CAAM data show

China saw new energy vehicle (NEV) sales of 525,000 units in February, up 55.9 percent year-on-year and up 28.7 percent from January, according to data released today by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM).

The CAAM figures are wholesale sales by vehicle companies, where NEVs include battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) and fuel cell vehicles.

China generated sales of 376,000 BEVs in February, up 43.9 percent year-on-year. PHEV sales were 149,000 units, up 98.0 percent year-on-year. Sales of fuel cell vehicles were 40 units, down 77.5 percent year-on-year.

Sales of all vehicles in China were 1.976 million units in February, up 13.5 percent year-on-year and up 19.83 percent from January.

China NEV sales at 525,000 units in Feb, up 28.7% from Jan, CAAM data show-CnEVPost

This means that the penetration rate of NEVs in China by the CAAM figures was 26.6 percent in February, up 1.9 percentage points from 24.7 in January.

China NEV sales at 525,000 units in Feb, up 28.7% from Jan, CAAM data show-CnEVPost

Production of NEVs in China was 552,000 units in January, up 48.8 percent year-on-year and up 29.9 percent from January.

Production of all vehicles in China in January was 2,032,000 units, up 11.9 percent year-on-year and 27.5 percent from January.

It is worth noting that last year, February 1-6 was the New Year's holiday, which caused disruptions to sales and production at that time. This year, that holiday was January 21-27.

Because the Chinese New Year holiday fell in the same month last year and in January this year, and some local governments introduced policies to boost auto consumption last month, China's auto production and sales increased significantly in February, the CAAM said.

In February, 329,000 vehicles were exported from China, up 82.2 percent year-on-year and up 9.4 percent from January.

Among them, exports of NEVs were 87,000 units, up 79.5 percent year-on-year and up 5.3 percent from January.

In January-February, China's vehicle sales were 3.625 million units, down 15.2 percent from a year earlier, according to the CAAM.

NEVs sold 933,000 units in January-February, up 20.8 percent year-on-year, with a market share of 25.7 percent.

In the first two months, sales of models priced at RMB 150,000 ($21,540) to RMB 250,000 and those priced at RMB 350,000 to RMB 500,000 increased year-on-year, while sales of models in other price segments declined.

For conventional internal combustion engine vehicles, sales of models in the price range of RMB 300,000 to RMB 350,000 increased year-on-year in January-February, while sales of models in all other price ranges declined.

TSLA.US

The (NASDAQ: TSLA) Model Y was the No. 2 best-selling SUV in China in February, with the BYD (OTCMKTS: BYDDY) Song taking the top spot by a significant margin.

Model Y retail sales in China in February were 25,526 units, up 37.3 percent from 18,593 units a year ago, according to data released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

That puts the Tesla SUV at No. 2 on the list of best-selling SUVs in China, according to the CPCA's list.

The BYD Song topped the list with 51,592 retail sales in February, up 110.3 percent from 24,532 units in the same month last year.

BYD Yuan Plus retail sales in February were 20,279 units, up 349.1 percent from 4,515 units in the same month last year, and ranked third on the list.

In January-February, BYD Song retail sales were 101,301 units, up 115.6 percent year-on-year, making it the best-selling SUV in China for the first two months.

The Tesla Model Y came in second on the list with 39,710 units in the same period, up 13.6 percent year-on-year, and the Changan CS75 came in third with 35,030 units.

Notably, this is the first time the CPCA has not placed the Model Y in the ranking of high-end SUV sales with a starting price above 300,000 yuan ($43,080).

In the CPCA's previous lists, the Model Y has appeared in the premium SUV sales rankings, even though its starting price has been below RMB 300,000 after two major price cuts.

Tesla Model 3 sales in February were 8,397 units, up 82.3 percent from 4,607 units a year ago, according to the CPCA.

This puts the Model 3 at No. 7 among the best-selling new energy sedans in February.

The BYD Qin was the best-selling new energy sedan in February, with the NIO ET5 ranking 10th on the list with 6,471 units sold.

In January-February, the Tesla Model 3 retailed 21,056 units in China, placing it at No. 6 on the list of best-selling new energy sedans.

NIO ET5 drops 1 spot in ranking of top-selling premium sedans in China

ET5 ranks No. 7 with 6,471 retail sales in February, surpassed by Audi A4L with 6,935 sales.

NIO.US | 9866.HK | NIO.SG

NIO's (NYSE: NIO) ET5 electric sedan slipped in a China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) sales ranking of premium sedans, as it was passed by the Audi A4L last month.

With 6,471 retail sales in February, the ET5 ranked No. 7 in China for premium sedan sales starting at more than 300,000 yuan ($43,080), according to a list released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

The ET5 ranking dropped one spot from January as the previously No. 7 Audi A4L outsold the ET5 with 6,935 units in February.

In January, the ET5 ranked No. 6 on the list with 5,795 retail sales, while the Audi A4L was ranked No. 7 with 4,943 units.

The ET5 is the cheapest in the NIO product array, with a starting price of RMB 328,000. Deliveries of the model began on September 30, 2022.

NIO delivered 12,157 vehicles in February, including 5,037 SUVs, and 7,120 sedans.

Considering that NIO's sedans include only the ET7 and ET5, this means that ET7 delivered 649 units in February.

The ET7 has failed to make the list for the past two months, and the flagship NIO sedan had 1,379 deliveries in December, when it ranked No. 10.

The Audi A6L was the best-selling premium sedan in China in February, with 12,167 units sold, and the top spot on the list in January was the BMW 5 Series.

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Mercedes-Benz C-Class came in second and third with 12,153 and 11,869 units respectively in February.

The BMW 5 Series and BMW 3 Series ranked fourth and fifth in February with 9,609 and 8,868 units respectively. The BMW 3 Series BEV ranked 8th with 2,976 units.
