The popularity of ChatGPT has led players in the autonomous driving industry to start expecting more from artificial intelligence (AI) technology. Now, a Chinese startup has released a large model of self-driving cognition, becoming the first in the industry to do so.
Great Wall Motor-backed startup Haomo.AI Technology officially launched DriveGPT today, after it previewed the AI large model in February.
DriveGPT is the first generative large model for autonomous driving that will reshape the technological path to automotive intelligence, the Beijing-based company announced today at its 8th Haomo AI Day event.
The AI model builds RLHF (Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback) technology by bringing in driving data for continuous optimization of self-driving cognitive decision models.
The goal of DriveGPT is to achieve end-to-end autonomous driving, and at this stage, it is mainly used to solve the cognitive decision problem of autonomous driving, said Gu Weihao, CEO of Haomo, at today's event.
DriveGPT has been opened to a limited number of partners, and the first batch includes Beijing Jiaotong University School of Computer and Information Technology, Qualcomm, Volcano Engine, Huawei Cloud, JD Technology, NavInfo, WEY Brand, and Intel.
GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer), essentially solves for the probability of the next word occurring, sampling from a probability distribution and generating a word with each call.
This continuous loop generates a sequence of characters for various downstream tasks. ChatGPT evolved on such a model.
On February 17, as the AI frenzy generated by ChatGPT continues worldwide, Haomo upgraded its large model of self-driving cognition to DriveGPT, calling it the first of its kind in the world of self-driving cognition.
DriveGPT completed model building and validation of the first phase of data with parameters comparable in size to GPT-2, the company said at the time, adding that DriveGPT will continue to introduce large-scale real data next to continuously improve its measurement.
At today's Haomo AI Day, Gu provided more technical details about DriveGPT.
Simply put, DriveGPT is the GPT large model in autonomous driving, which is also solving for the probability of the next Token, according to Gu.
Each call is equivalent to generating a Token based on a sequence of pre-trained Tokens, which are equivalent to a word in natural language processing, except that DriveGPT's Tokens are used to describe driving scenarios.
The sequence of Tokens is a complete time sequence of driving scenarios, including the next possible state of the entire traffic environment and the state of the car.
Under a unified generative framework, DriveGPT can do multiple tasks including planning, decision making and reasoning all together, according to Gu.
DriveGPT's pre-trained model uses 120 billion parameters and is based on 40 million production vehicles' driving data.
In addition to that, Haomo used partially screened human takeover data -- roughly 50,000 Clips -- for training the feedback model, according to Gu.
To easily understand the logic behind this, Gu gives an example:
Suppose we give a prompt to reach a certain target point, this prompt may come from the navigation of a map, or in the future it may come from human voice instructions during voice interaction.
DriveGPT will generate many possible driving styles, some aggressive -- change lanes continuously to overtake and reach the target point quickly, and some will be more steady -- follow other cars to the end.
If there are no other additional prompts, then DriveGPT will follow the optimal results from the feedback training and deliver a result that is more in line with most people's driving preferences.
Haomo is continuing to optimize DriveGPT, and the initial results will first be used in the new Mocha DHT-PHEV with Haomo HPilot 3.0, Gu said.
The Mocha DHT-PHEV is a model of Great Wall Motor's premium brand Wey, and Gu said the model will be available soon.
"We can also provide an excellent driving experience for city NOH (Navigation on HPilot)," Gu said.
In addition to city NOH, scenarios including city cruising, driving shortcut recommendations, and extrication, autonomous driving capabilities are also expected to see new breakthroughs, according to Gu.
"Ultimately we hope to arrive at the ultimate scenario of autonomous driving: driverless," he said, adding, "We believe that DriveGPT will reshape the technological path to vehicle intelligence, allowing assisted driving to evolve faster and autonomous driving to arrive sooner."
Notably, Haomo is one of the strongest players in the autonomous driving space, despite being an under-the-radar startup, especially compared to high-profile local electric vehicle companies.
Haomo was the former autonomous driving division of Great Wall Motor and became an independent company in November 2019. Its core team members come partly from Great Wall Motor's smart driving R&D team and partly from local tech companies.
In September 2022, Ora Funky Cat and Wey Coffee 01 from Great Wall Motor achieved results comparable to the Tesla Model Y in a European safety test.
Both the Ora Funky Cat and the Wey Coffee 01 were equipped with assisted driving technology provided by Haomo, which was a major reason for their high scores, especially on Safety Assist, at the time.
At the 7th AI Day event held today, January 5, Haomo announced MANA OASIS, an autonomous driving computing center launched by it and Volcano Engine, a cloud service platform owned by ByteDance, with a total computing power of 670 PFLOPS, the largest in China at the time.
The computing power support provided by MANA OASIS was key to the training and technology becoming available for DriveGPT, Gu said today.
Separately, Haomo chairman Zhang Kai said at today's event that in addition to the new Mocha DHT-PHEV, the second HPilot 3.0-equipped model, Wey Lanshan, will be launched this year.
Haomo's HPilot has been installed in nearly 20 models and has assisted users to drive more than 40 million kilometers, Zhang said.
In overseas markets, vehicles equipped with HPilot have been shipped to regions including the European Union and Israel and delivered to local consumers.
Vehicles equipped with the driving assistance system will be available in the Middle East, South Africa and Australia, and the Mexican and Russian versions of HPilot will be in mass production soon, Zhang said.

CATL's share of the LFP market in March was 39.47 percent, higher than 38.88 percent for BYD, which was No. 1 in the LFP market in both January and February.
China's electric vehicle (EV) battery installations continued to grow last month, with CATL maintaining its lead and regaining the top spot over BYD in the lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery market.
China's power battery installations in March were 27.8 GWh, up 29.7 percent year-on-year and up 26.7 percent from February, according to data released today by the China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance (CABIA).
CATL's power battery installed base in March was 12.49 GWh, continuing to rank first with a 44.95 percent share, up from 43.76 percent in February.
BYD installed 7.40 GWh of power batteries in March, ranking second with a 26.65 percent share, down 7.54 percentage points from 34.19 percent in February.
CALB saw a market share gain in March, as the company installed 2.86 GWh of power batteries in the month, ranking third with a 10.28 percent share, up 2.89 percentage points from 7.39 percent in February.
Gotion High-tech ranked fourth with a 4.51 percent share of 1.25 GWh installed in March, while Eve Energy ranked fifth with a 3.86 percent share of 1.07 GWh installed.
China's ternary lithium battery installed base in March was 8.7 GWh, accounting for 31.4 percent of the total installed base, up 6.3 percent year-on-year and up 29.8 percent from January.
Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries accounted for 19.0 GWh or 68.5 percent of the total installed base, up 44.4 percent year-on-year and up 25.3 percent from January.
In the ternary Li-ion battery market, CATL ranked first with 56.99 percent of the total installed base of 4.97 GWh in March.
CALB and LG Energy Solution ranked second and third in the ternary battery market with 16.82 percent and 6.52 percent shares, respectively.
In the LFP battery market, CATL topped the list with 39.47 percent of the installed base of 7.51 GWh in March, the first time it overtook BYD in this market this year.
BYD was second in the LFP market with 7.40 GWh installed in March, with a share of 38.88 percent. In both January and February, BYD ranked first in this market, with shares of 51.52 percent and 49.37 percent, respectively.
CALB and Gotion High-tech ranked third and fourth in the LFP battery market with 7.29 percent and 6.20 percent shares, respectively.

The CAAM proposes that China's central and local governments continue to introduce policies to promote auto consumption, given the current weak market expectations.
China's new energy vehicle (NEV) sales in March were 653,000 units, up 34.8 percent year-on-year and up 24.4 percent from February, according to data released today by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM).
The CAAM released data on wholesale sales by automakers, where NEVs include battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) and fuel cell vehicles.
China saw BEV sales of 490,000 units in March, up 23.8 percent year-on-year. PHEV sales were 163,000 units, up 84.3 percent year-on-year. Sales of fuel cell vehicles were 50 units, up 27 percent year-on-year.
Sales of all vehicles in China were 2.451 million units in March, up 9.7 percent year-on-year and up 24 percent from February.
This means that China's NEVs had a penetration rate of 26.6 percent in March, the same as in February.
Production of NEVs in China was 674,000 units in March, up 44.8 percent year-on-year and up 22.1 percent from February.
Production of all vehicles in China was 2,584,000 units in March, up 15.3 percent year-on-year and 27.2 percent from February.
With purchase tax incentives for internal combustion engine vehicles and purchase subsidies for NEVs both expiring at the end of last year, coupled with price cuts since the beginning of the year, China's auto industry faced significant pressure in the first quarter, the CAAM said.

In March, exports of vehicles from China were 364,000 units, up 110 percent from a year earlier and up 10.6 percent from February.
Among them, the export volume of NEVs was 78,000 units, up 390 percent year-on-year but down 10.3 percent from February.
In January-March, China's vehicle sales were 6.076 million units, down 6.7 percent from a year earlier, according to the CAAM.
NEVs sold 1.586 million units in January-March, up 26.2 percent year-on-year, with a market share of 26.1 percent.

NIO (NYSE: NIO) will launch the new ET7 at the Shanghai auto show next week, in addition to the launch of the new ES6.
"At Auto Shanghai 2023, we are bringing the NIO House to the show floor once again," the electric vehicle (EV) maker announced today.
The full range of NIO models equipped with the Banyan intelligent system will be presented, the new ES6 will debut and the 2023 ET7 will be officially launched, NIO said.
Banyan is the software architecture for NIO's NT 2.0 platform-based models, and the company's NT 1.0 platform-based models use a software architecture called Aspen.
The upcoming biennial Shanghai auto show will be held from April 18-27, with press days from April 18-19, professional visitor days from April 20-21, and general public admission from April 22-27.
The show will be held at the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Shanghai, and NIO's booth is located in Hall 6.1, Stand 6A01.
The N-Box augmented entertainment console and AR glasses developed by NIO will be equipped on the EC7 for the first time for the public to experience, according to the company.
This is the first time NIO has confirmed the existence of the new ET7, after rumors began to emerge last month.
At the end of last month, some local media reported that the current NIO ET7 had been discontinued and that the facelift would be optimized for exterior and interior details.
On March 28, an image circulating on social media Xiaohongshu showed that the 2023 ET7 will have a new gold exterior option and will be available with a tow hook option.
Inside, the improved ET7 will have several details optimized, including the seats, wireless charging panel power, and low-speed beep, according to the information in the image.
The NIO ET7 was launched at the NIO Day 2020 event on January 9, 2021, the company's first sedan, with deliveries beginning on March 28, 2022.
Deliveries of the ET7 remained around 3,000 units per month for the vast majority of the second half of last year, but the figures slipped to 1,379 units in December.
Regarding the new ES6, NIO mentioned on April 1 that the model will be unveiled at the Shanghai auto show.
Notably, like the ES7, which is known as the EL7 in Europe, the new ES6 will also be known as the new EL6 in international markets, according to a previous NIO press release.

In retail, China's NEV penetration rate was 34.2 percent in March, up 6 percentage points from 28.2 percent in March 2022 and up from 31.6 percent in February.
Retail sales of new energy passenger vehicles (passenger NEVs) in China were 543,000 units in March, up 21.9 percent year-on-year and up 23.6 percent from February, according to data released by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) on April 10.
This is lower than the CPCA's preliminary figure of 549,000 units released on April 6, and lower than the 560,000 units it estimated in its March 25 report.
Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) continued to dominate, with 383,000 retail sales in March, accounting for 70.5 percent of all NEV retail sales. This represents a 6.4 percent year-on-year increase and a 30.1 percent increase from February.
Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) accounted for 160,000 retail sales in March, contributing 29.5 percent of NEV retail sales, up 87.6 percent year-on-year and up 10.4 percent from February.
Retail sales of all passenger vehicles in China were 1,587,000 units in March, up 0.3 percent year-on-year and up 14.3 percent from February, according to the CPCA.
In terms of retail sales, China's NEV penetration rate was 34.2 percent in March, up 6 percentage points from 28.2 percent in March 2022 and up from 31.6 percent in February.
The penetration rate of NEVs was 54.7 percent for local brands, 33.6 percent for luxury brands and 4.2 percent for mainstream joint venture brands.
Wholesale sales of new energy passenger vehicles in China were 617,000 units in March, up 35.2 percent year-on-year and up 24.5 percent from February.
This represents a 31 percent penetration of NEVs at wholesale in March, up 6 percentage points from the 25.1 percent penetration in March 2022 and up from 30.6 percent in February.
Chinese domestic brands saw a NEV penetration of 46.4 percent at wholesale in March, compared to 36 percent for luxury brands and 3.7 percent for mainstream joint venture brands.
China exported 70,000 passenger NEVs in March, with BEVs accounting for 94.3 percent of the total.
SAIC passenger car unit exported 23,654 units, BYD 13,312 units and Tesla China 12,206 units in March.
The recent drop in the price of lithium carbonate has helped manufacturers launch more cost-effective NEV models, the CPCA said.
But at the same time, the recent price cuts by some NEV companies may trigger a wait-and-see mood among consumers, the CPCA said.
