China EV battery installations in Mar: CATL overtakes BYD in LFP market for 1st time this year

CATL's share of the LFP market in March was 39.47 percent, higher than 38.88 percent for , which was No. 1 in the LFP market in both January and February.

China's electric vehicle (EV) battery installations continued to grow last month, with CATL maintaining its lead and regaining the top spot over BYD in the lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery market.

China's power battery installations in March were 27.8 GWh, up 29.7 percent year-on-year and up 26.7 percent from February, according to data released today by the China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance (CABIA).

CATL's power battery installed base in March was 12.49 GWh, continuing to rank first with a 44.95 percent share, up from 43.76 percent in February.

BYD installed 7.40 GWh of power batteries in March, ranking second with a 26.65 percent share, down 7.54 percentage points from 34.19 percent in February.

CALB saw a market share gain in March, as the company installed 2.86 GWh of power batteries in the month, ranking third with a 10.28 percent share, up 2.89 percentage points from 7.39 percent in February.

Gotion High-tech ranked fourth with a 4.51 percent share of 1.25 GWh installed in March, while Eve Energy ranked fifth with a 3.86 percent share of 1.07 GWh installed.

China's ternary lithium battery installed base in March was 8.7 GWh, accounting for 31.4 percent of the total installed base, up 6.3 percent year-on-year and up 29.8 percent from January.

Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries accounted for 19.0 GWh or 68.5 percent of the total installed base, up 44.4 percent year-on-year and up 25.3 percent from January.

In the ternary Li-ion battery market, CATL ranked first with 56.99 percent of the total installed base of 4.97 GWh in March.

CALB and LG Energy Solution ranked second and third in the ternary battery market with 16.82 percent and 6.52 percent shares, respectively.

In the LFP battery market, CATL topped the list with 39.47 percent of the installed base of 7.51 GWh in March, the first time it overtook BYD in this market this year.

BYD was second in the LFP market with 7.40 GWh installed in March, with a share of 38.88 percent. In both January and February, BYD ranked first in this market, with shares of 51.52 percent and 49.37 percent, respectively.

CALB and Gotion High-tech ranked third and fourth in the LFP battery market with 7.29 percent and 6.20 percent shares, respectively.

China's new energy vehicle (NEV) sales in March were 653,000 units, up 34.8 percent year-on-year and up 24.4 percent from February, according to data released today by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM).

The CAAM released data on wholesale sales by automakers, where NEVs include battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) and fuel cell vehicles.

China saw BEV sales of 490,000 units in March, up 23.8 percent year-on-year. PHEV sales were 163,000 units, up 84.3 percent year-on-year. Sales of fuel cell vehicles were 50 units, up 27 percent year-on-year.

Sales of all vehicles in China were 2.451 million units in March, up 9.7 percent year-on-year and up 24 percent from February.

This means that China's NEVs had a penetration rate of 26.6 percent in March, the same as in February.

Production of NEVs in China was 674,000 units in March, up 44.8 percent year-on-year and up 22.1 percent from February.

Production of all vehicles in China was 2,584,000 units in March, up 15.3 percent year-on-year and 27.2 percent from February.

With purchase tax incentives for internal combustion engine vehicles and purchase subsidies for NEVs both expiring at the end of last year, coupled with price cuts since the beginning of the year, China's auto industry faced significant pressure in the first quarter, the CAAM said.

The CAAM proposes that China's central and local governments continue to introduce policies to promote auto consumption, given the current weak market expectations.

In March, exports of vehicles from China were 364,000 units, up 110 percent from a year earlier and up 10.6 percent from February.

Among them, the export volume of NEVs was 78,000 units, up 390 percent year-on-year but down 10.3 percent from February.

In January-March, China's vehicle sales were 6.076 million units, down 6.7 percent from a year earlier, according to the CAAM.

NEVs sold 1.586 million units in January-March, up 26.2 percent year-on-year, with a market share of 26.1 percent.

NIO to launch new ET7 at Shanghai auto show besides new ES6

NIO (NYSE: NIO) will launch the new ET7 at the Shanghai auto show next week, in addition to the launch of the new ES6.

"At Auto Shanghai 2023, we are bringing the NIO House to the show floor once again," the electric vehicle (EV) maker announced today.

The full range of NIO models equipped with the Banyan intelligent system will be presented, the new ES6 will debut and the 2023 ET7 will be officially launched, NIO said.

Banyan is the software architecture for NIO's NT 2.0 platform-based models, and the company's NT 1.0 platform-based models use a software architecture called Aspen.

The upcoming biennial Shanghai auto show will be held from April 18-27, with press days from April 18-19, professional visitor days from April 20-21, and general public admission from April 22-27.

The show will be held at the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Shanghai, and NIO's booth is located in Hall 6.1, Stand 6A01.

The N-Box augmented entertainment console and AR glasses developed by NIO will be equipped on the EC7 for the first time for the public to experience, according to the company.

This is the first time NIO has confirmed the existence of the new ET7, after rumors began to emerge last month.

At the end of last month, some local media reported that the current NIO ET7 had been discontinued and that the facelift would be optimized for exterior and interior details.

On March 28, an image circulating on social media Xiaohongshu showed that the 2023 ET7 will have a new gold exterior option and will be available with a tow hook option.

Inside, the improved ET7 will have several details optimized, including the seats, wireless charging panel power, and low-speed beep, according to the information in the image.

The NIO ET7 was launched at the NIO Day 2020 event on January 9, 2021, the company's first sedan, with deliveries beginning on March 28, 2022.

Deliveries of the ET7 remained around 3,000 units per month for the vast majority of the second half of last year, but the figures slipped to 1,379 units in December.

Regarding the new ES6, NIO mentioned on April 1 that the model will be unveiled at the Shanghai auto show.

Notably, like the ES7, which is known as the EL7 in Europe, the new ES6 will also be known as the new EL6 in international markets, according to a previous NIO press release.

China’s Mar passenger NEV retail up 23.6% MoM to 543,000, CPCA data show

In retail, China's NEV penetration rate was 34.2 percent in March, up 6 percentage points from 28.2 percent in March 2022 and up from 31.6 percent in February.

Retail sales of new energy passenger vehicles (passenger NEVs) in China were 543,000 units in March, up 21.9 percent year-on-year and up 23.6 percent from February, according to data released by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) on April 10.

This is lower than the CPCA's preliminary figure of 549,000 units released on April 6, and lower than the 560,000 units it estimated in its March 25 report.

Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) continued to dominate, with 383,000 retail sales in March, accounting for 70.5 percent of all NEV retail sales. This represents a 6.4 percent year-on-year increase and a 30.1 percent increase from February.

Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) accounted for 160,000 retail sales in March, contributing 29.5 percent of NEV retail sales, up 87.6 percent year-on-year and up 10.4 percent from February.

Retail sales of all passenger vehicles in China were 1,587,000 units in March, up 0.3 percent year-on-year and up 14.3 percent from February, according to the CPCA.

In terms of retail sales, China's NEV penetration rate was 34.2 percent in March, up 6 percentage points from 28.2 percent in March 2022 and up from 31.6 percent in February.

The penetration rate of NEVs was 54.7 percent for local brands, 33.6 percent for luxury brands and 4.2 percent for mainstream joint venture brands.

Wholesale sales of new energy passenger vehicles in China were 617,000 units in March, up 35.2 percent year-on-year and up 24.5 percent from February.

This represents a 31 percent penetration of NEVs at wholesale in March, up 6 percentage points from the 25.1 percent penetration in March 2022 and up from 30.6 percent in February.

Chinese domestic brands saw a NEV penetration of 46.4 percent at wholesale in March, compared to 36 percent for luxury brands and 3.7 percent for mainstream joint venture brands.

China exported 70,000 passenger NEVs in March, with BEVs accounting for 94.3 percent of the total.

SAIC passenger car unit exported 23,654 units, BYD 13,312 units and China 12,206 units in March.

The recent drop in the price of lithium carbonate has helped manufacturers launch more cost-effective NEV models, the CPCA said.

But at the same time, the recent price cuts by some NEV companies may trigger a wait-and-see mood among consumers, the CPCA said.

BYD flexes innovation muscle, unveils intelligent body control system

BYD officially unveiled its intelligent body control system called DiSus, a technological breakthrough that follows its DM Super Hybrid technology, e-Platform 3.0, Blade Battery and e⁴ platform.

 

The video above, recorded by CnEVPost at BYD's technology launch event today, showcases the latest innovation from the Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) giant.

BYD officially unveiled its intelligent body control system, called DiSus, at its Shenzhen global headquarters on April 10, another technological breakthrough following its DM Super Hybrid technology, e-Platform 3.0, Blade Battery and e⁴ platform.

The company had previously warmed up for the technology, which is called 云辇 in Chinese, Yunnian in pinyin, literally meaning the vehicle in which the emperor rides.

Similar to how BYD shocked the audience by having the U8 SUV enter in crabwalk mode when it unveiled the e⁴ platform at the Yangwang brand's launch on January 5, it earned the same excitement by having the U9 perform a body dance at today's launch.

The BYD DiSus system is the first in-house developed intelligent body control system introduced by a Chinese auto company, marking a breakthrough from zero to one, said Wang Chuanfu, chairman and president of the NEV maker.

The body control system ensures that the vehicle is agile and effectively compatible in most driving scenarios, minimizing the risk of vehicle rollover and reducing the displacement of occupants during high-speed cornering, full-throttle acceleration, or emergency braking, Wang said.

BYD DiSus system can protect the vehicle from scratches and damage under various road conditions, including snow, mud and water.

BYD's breakthrough in this technology has been made possible by the advantages in electrification and intelligence of NEVs, according to Wang.

Electrification has brought about changes in vehicle architecture, and vehicle control has shifted from mechanical control to electrical signal control, with dramatic increases in precision and efficiency, Wang explained.

At the same time, NEVs are equipped with a variety of sensing elements and a deep intelligent fusion, making the perception dimension more diversified, he said.

Unlike solutions that focus on a single technology or a single component enhancement, BYD offers a systematic solution for vertical motion control, he said.

The system provides collaborative control in body dynamics, laying the foundation for future development of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), he said.

Three branches

The BYD DiSus system is divided into three branches, including the Intelligent Damping Body Control System (DiSus-C), the Intelligent Air Body Control System (DiSus-A), and the Intelligent Hydraulic Body Control System (DiSus-P).

DiSus-C adjusts the damping by controlling the damper solenoid valve, and the system brings significant improvement in driving comfort compared to traditional passive suspension.

The system can receive thousands of signal inputs per second, and the DiSus intelligent computing center has processing times as fast as microseconds, allowing for rapid adjustment of damper damping, according to BYD.

DiSus-A, on the other hand, is somewhat similar to the air suspension currently used in many high-end vehicles, with a suspension adjustment of up to 150 mm.

The branch offers more than a dozen function modes, including adjusting with speed, welcome mode, convenient access mode, and height safety lock mode. Users can also personalize the settings for a richer experience.

DiSus-P is the most advanced of these three branches, and BYD said it is the world's first intelligent hydraulic body control system.

The system can control the oil intake of the damper, damping adjustment valve and stiffness adjustment valve to achieve dynamic adjustment of body control.

The DiSus-P suspension has an adjustable travel of up to 200 mm, and it can lift all four wheels simultaneously as well as independently for a single wheel.

In daily driving, DiSus-P is at the first level of stiffness to provide a comfortable ride.

When the vehicle is in a sharp acceleration and deceleration, high-speed cornering and other intense driving conditions, DiSus-P can provide an instantaneous 200 percent increase in stiffness to allow the vehicle to achieve better handling performance.

When the vehicle encounters a fall and other emergencies in high-intensity off-road, DiSus-P can trigger the third-stage stiffness in an emergency, effectively reducing the impact load by 50 percent, according to BYD.

BYD has conducted more than 30 months and over 10 million kilometers of endurance verification for the DiSus system, covering temperature environments from -40°C to 85°C, according to the company.

Mass production plans

DiSus-P will be first equipped on Yangwang U8 and DiSus-A will be equipped on Denza N7.

Some BYD Han, BYD Tang and Denza models with hardware conditions will be able to equip DiSus-C through Over-the-Air (OTA) upgrades.

In addition, several models under BYD's new brand focused on professional and personalized identities, which will be launched this summer, will also use the DiSus system, according to the company.

At the end of today's launch event, BYD offered an Easter egg, the dancing of the body of the Yangwang U9 supercar shown in the video at the beginning of this post.

The Yangwang U9 is equipped with a branch called DiSus-X that demonstrates its ability to dance, jump and drive even with only three wheels.

The DiSus system is the latest in BYD's vast technology reserve to be made public, and Wang had previously mentioned that BYD's technology reserve is like a fish pond, ready to fish one up when needed.

BYD is already the world's largest manufacturer of NEVs, having sold 1,863,494 NEVs in 2022, up 208.64 percent year-on-year.

The company aims to sell at least 3 million vehicles in 2023 and become the largest automaker in China by the end of the year.

Its latest technology, announced today, is expected to increase the appeal of models equipped with it and thus help the company achieve its goals.
