We are starting to adopt updated stylebook

Updates you may notice include that we will be using "" instead of "NIO" as before, and will be using "" instead of "XPeng".

When I graduated from college and joined China Daily in July 2009, my first major task was to familiarize myself with a dozen-page stylebook.

For an English-language media outlet, a stylebook ensures that all reporters and editors remain coherent in the details of their wording.

When I launched CnEVPost in December 2020, we largely followed the style of China Daily and Reuters in terms of wording details.

In the past couple of years, with a large number of new companies and models in the Chinese EV industry, we started to refer more to company statements or press releases in some of our wording styles.

However, in retrospect, the mainstream international media did not do so, which requires us to update our stylebook in time.

Starting immediately, CnEVPost is moving to the latest 2023 version stylebook, which is our internal operating guideline and will ensure that the wording style will remain consistent, whether it's mine or any other author's articles.

Here are a few updates that you may notice:

We will be using "Nio" instead of the previously used "NIO".

We will be using "Xpeng" instead of "XPeng".

More updates may be made in areas you won't notice, but are important to us, especially regarding the wording style for some EV models.

We will not adjust the wording style of past articles; the latest stylebook will guide our writing going forward, including CnEVPost and CnEVData.

Thanks to all our readers for your support in the past! If you have any feedback, please feel free to leave a message.

NIO to start new ES8 delivery on Jun 28, cuts price of top trim by $1,400

Show cars of the new ES8 became gradually available in showrooms starting June 24, and NIO added more features to the model as standard.

NIO (NYSE: NIO) has announced delivery schedules for the new ES8 and reduced the price of the highest-priced version by RMB 10,000 ($1,400) as delivery of the flagship SUV approaches.

The company said today that show cars of the new ES8 became gradually available in NIO showrooms beginning June 24, and the model will allow consumers to lock in orders, test drive and begin delivery on June 28.

NIO launched the new ES8 on NIO Day 2022, December 24, 2022, the company's transition to the NT 2.0 platform for its first production vehicle.

With a length, width and height of 5,099 mm, 1,989 mm and 1,750 mm respectively, and a wheelbase of 3,070 mm, the new ES8 targets the market for luxury SUVs, including Land Rover.

It is powered by NIO's second-generation electric drive platform with a maximum drive power of 480 kW and maximum torque of 850 Nm, and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds.

NIO is offering three options for the ES8, including the regular, Executive and Signature editions. Here is the pricing at launch:

Including the battery, the regular version of the new ES8 starts at RMB 528,000 for the standard range version with the 75-kWh battery. The 100-kWh version starts at RMB 586,000. If consumers rent the battery under BaaS solution, they will both cost RMB 458,000, and the monthly battery rental fees are RMB 980 and RMB 1,680 respectively.

Including the battery, the starting price for the two range versions of the new ES8's Executive Edition is RMB 548,000 and RMB 606,000 respectively. Both start at RMB 478,000 under BaaS solution, and the monthly battery rental costs RMB 980 yuan and RMB 1,680 yuan respectively.

The signature version of the model is only available with the 100-kWh battery pack, starting at RMB 638,000 and RMB 510,000 in BaaS mode, with a monthly battery rental cost of RMB 1,680.

On June 12, NIO made the battery swap benefits, previously free several times a month, optional, thus reducing the price of all models by RMB 30,000.

Following this move, the starting price of the new ES8, including the battery, becomes RMB 498,000 for the regular edition, RMB 518,000 for the Executive Edition and RMB 608,000 for the Signature Edition.

Notably, NIO announced today that the price of the Signature Edition of the new ES8 has been adjusted to RMB 598,000, a further reduction of RMB 10,000.

In addition to the price reduction, NIO has added an in-car refrigerator and 22-inch forged wheels as standard for the Signature Edition of the ES8.

The other two versions of the new ES8 also receive added features, with the Executive Edition receiving additional Nappa interior trim and a refrigerator as standard, and the Regular Edition receiving additional Nappa interior trim as standard.

NIO models no longer come standard with free battery swaps several times a month, and consumers who wish to get this benefit when purchasing the new ES8 will now need to pay an additional RMB 30,000.

BYD expands presence in Middle East with launch of Atto 3 in UAE

The Atto 3 is priced significantly lower than other EVs in the UAE, making it by far the most accessible electric model available in the UAE through official dealers.

BYD (OTCMKTS: BYDDY) has entered the UAE passenger car market to expand its presence in the Middle East further after having previously entered Israel and Jordan.

On June 21, BYD launched the Atto 3 in the UAE with its local partner Al-Futtaim Electric Mobility Company. The model, known as the Yuan Plus in China, is the first global model from the new energy vehicle (NEV) maker.

This revolutionary vehicle marks a significant milestone in the UAE's journey towards sustainable mobility and reinforces both BYD and Al-Futtaim's commitment to contributing towards the UAE's Net-Zero 2050 strategic goals, BYD said in a press release.

The Atto 3 is priced at Dh149,900 ($40,810) in the UAE, below the Dh150,000 mark.

The pricing makes it by far the most accessible EV model available in the UAE through an official dealership, said Gulf News, an English-language UAE media outlet.

Other EVs are priced closer to Dh200,000 and higher, leaving a fairly open field for BYD to build scale in this market, Gulf News said.

BYD officially launched the Yuan Plus in China on February 19, 2022, and opens pre-orders for the model in Australia on the same day under the Atto 3 name.

The model is currently offered in five versions in China with a price range of RMB 139,800 ($19,470) to RMB 167,800.

Prior to the official launch of the Atto 3 in the UAE, more than 95,000 online visitors viewed the model, with more than 3,000 registered leads and 153 bookings, said Al-Futtaim managing director Hasan Nergiz, according to Gulf News.

"What people don't understand that much is that BYD is already the No. 1 EV manufacturer in the world and outsells . Atto 3 is the model that we will deploy to build a presence in the UAE and then will come the other models," Nergiz said.

The Atto 3 is BYD's first A-class SUV based on e-Platform 3.0, with a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 7.3 seconds and a maximum range of 420 km WLTP.

BYD considered the needs and preferences of its UAE customers, and the model passed product localization and high-temperature testing, it said.

"We understand the importance of product localization for the UAE market with its unique climate and hot weather," said AD Huang, general manager of BYD Middle East & Africa.

"Last year, we conducted extensive hot weather testing to ensure the BYD Atto 3 performs optimally even in the region's challenging climate and hot summers. Over the course of several months, we drove more than 100,000 kilometers across the UAE in order to optimize the vehicle's performance and ensure that our customers receive the best driving experience possible with the BYD Atto 3," he said.

Currently, EV sales account for less than 5 percent of new car sales in the UAE, and that number is skewed toward fleet sales rather than retail buyers, the Gulf News report said, adding that that could change as people in their 20s or 30s become early adopters of EVs.

BYD will next launch its flagship Han sedan in the UAE, for which pre-orders are open on the BYD UAE website and will actually launch in October.

The UAE is the latest Middle East market BYD has entered, with the NEV maker announcing its entry into the Israeli passenger car market last August and launching four models -- Dolphin, Tang EV, Atto 3 and Han EV -- in Jordan on March 9.

BYD sold 240,220 NEVs in May, up 108.99 percent from 114,943 units in the same month last year and up 14.23 percent from 210,295 units in April, according to data released earlier this month.

In May, BYD sold 10,203 NEVs in overseas markets, down 31.19 percent from 14,827 units in April.

The tight pace of new models from launch to delivery is one of the most important features of the highly competitive Chinese electric vehicle (EV) market.

Smart Automobile, a joint venture between and Mercedes-Benz, began deliveries of the Smart #3 in China yesterday, just 20 days after the model's official launch.

Smart announced on Wednesday that the first Smart #3 vehicles were delivered in 41 cities, including Shanghai, Beijing, Nanjing, Chengdu and Xi'an, without disclosing the exact number of vehicles delivered.

Smart officially launched the Smart #3 in China at an event on June 1, its second model after the Smart #1 following its electrification transition.

The Smart #3 is available in three regular versions -- Pro+, Pulse and Premium -- starting at RMB 209,900 ($29,240), RMB 239,900 and RMB 255,900 respectively.

The model is also available in a limited edition Brabus Performance version of only 1,999 units at RMB 289,900.

The car is positioned as a coupe SUV with a length, width and height of 4,400/4,542 mm, 1,844 mm and 1,556 mm respectively, and a wheelbase of 2,785 mm.

The Smart #1 measures 4,270 mm in length, 1,822 mm in width and 1,636 mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,750 mm.

This means that the Smart #3 is longer and wider than the Smart #1, but lower.

The Smart #3 is available with two power options, a single-motor version with 200 kW peak motor power and a dual-motor version with 115 kW and 200 kW peak front and rear motors, respectively.

It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds for the single-motor version and 4.3 seconds for the dual-motor version, and from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds for the Brabus Performance version.

The model is available in three range versions with CLTC ranges of 520 km, 555 km and 580 km, and its battery pack is a ternary lithium battery from CALB and Sunwoda.

On June 18, Smart announced the opening of its flagship experience center in Shanghai, its fifth after Chengdu, Hangzhou, Guangzhou and Beijing.

Smart now has 17 stores in Shanghai, including one brand flagship center, four service centers and 12 retail showrooms. This year, Smart will add an additional eight stores in East China, it said.

To date, Smart has built 164 offline outlets in China, and the number is expected to exceed 200 by the end of this year, covering more than 60 first-tier, new first-tier and second-tier cities, it said.

Smart delivered 2,624 vehicles in China in May, down 40.23 percent from 4,390 units in April, according to data it released earlier this month.

Smart has delivered a cumulative total of 28,923 electric vehicles in China since last September, data monitored by CnEVPost show.
