Xpeng targets G6 monthly sales of over 10,000

Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV) officially launched the G6 yesterday, and the company's management clearly has high hopes for the new SUV.

The G6's monthly sales target is at least 10,000 units, Xpeng chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng said in an interview with local media after yesterday's G6 launch, according to a report by Auto Home.

Mr. He disagreed with the idea that Xpeng needs to turn its fortunes around with the G6, saying that a company that bets its future on one car is doing it wrong.

In the auto industry, automakers need long-term thinking and systemic competitiveness, he said.

Xpeng officially launched the G6 yesterday, offering five versions with starting prices of RMB 209,900 ($28,940), RMB 229,900, RMB 234,900, RMB 254,900 and RMB 276,900 respectively.

Of the five options, the three versions in the middle price range will be the best sellers, meaning the G6 will be in the RMB 250,000 range in terms of average sales price, according to Mr. He.

At yesterday's launch, he said the G6 is expected to be the top-selling smart electric SUV in China within two months priced at the RMB 250,000 level.

The Xpeng G6 received more than 25,000 pre-orders within 72 hours of the start of pre-sales on June 9, and more than 35,000 pre-orders as of June 28, said Yi Han, the company's vice president of marketing, repeating Mr. He's remarks at yesterday's launch event.

Forty percent of Xpeng G6 orders came from offline stores and 60 percent from online channels, Yi said.

Mr. He made it clear in yesterday's interview that Xpeng will not launch extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) models similar to (NASDAQ: LI).

As an entrepreneur, choices need to be made and trade-offs need to be made, he said.

In a June 15 speech, Mr. He said he could foresee a large number of hybrid models in China in the next two years, especially inside family cars.

"Because everyone sees the success, they will follow. Because they are following, a large number of models will focus on the same place. It's a very interesting thing," he said in the speech.

Xpeng shares traded in Hong Kong continued to rise today, up more than 14 percent to HK$51.80 at press time, giving it a 30 percent gain for the week.

Xpeng officially launches G6 with starting price of $29,010 to regain past glory

The G6 is expected to be the top-selling smart electric SUV in China in the RMB 250,000 price level within two months, said 's CEO.

Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV) today officially launched its highly anticipated new SUV, the G6, in China at prices significantly below the pre-sale price to recapture its past glory.

The G6 is a direct competitor to the Model Y, and Xpeng is offering it in five versions, including two Pro versions and three Max versions.

These five versions start at RMB 209,900 ($29,010), RMB 229,900, RMB 234,900, RMB 254,900 and RMB 276,900 respectively.

The starting price is RMB 15,100 lower than Xpeng's G6 pre-sale price of RMB 225,000 announced on June 9.

The G6 measures 4,753 mm in length, 1,920 mm in width and 1,650 mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,890 mm, which is essentially the same as the Tesla Model Y, which measures 4,750 mm in length, 1,921 mm in width and 1,624 mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,890 mm.

The Model Y is currently available in three versions in China, with starting prices of RMB 263,900, RMB 313,900 and RMB 363,900 respectively.

The Tesla model sold 31,054 units at retail in China in May, making it once again the best-selling SUV in the country, according to a ranking released earlier this month by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

Xpeng began pre-sales of the G6 on June 9 and later announced that the model had received more than 25,000 orders in 72 hours.

At today's launch event, Xpeng chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng said the G6 had more than 35,000 pre-sale orders as of June 28 since June 9.

The G6 is expected to become the top-selling smart electric SUV priced at the RMB 250,000 level in China within two months, he said.

It's worth noting that while Xpeng previously emphasized that the G6's most direct competitor is the Tesla Model Y, Mr. He's comments seem to rule out comparisons to the Model Y, which is priced above RMB 250,000 for all versions.

In China, consumers generally prefer SUVs with more space, which is why the earliest models from startups including Xpeng, (NYSE: Nio) and (NASDAQ: LI) were all SUVs.

Tesla's Model Y has also quickly become one of the best-selling electric vehicles in China after it starts production at its Shanghai plant in 2021.

From January to May, Model Y retail sales in China were 152,461 units, up 87.03 percent year-on-year, making it the best-selling SUV in China during that period.

Based on the 800 V platform, the Xpeng G6 boasts more than 100 advanced features, including a 3C battery that supports ultra-fast charging, and the company's signature driver assistance software, XNGP.

Four versions of the vehicle are single-motor rear-wheel drive models, offering a choice of two ranges -- 580 and 755 kilometers. The most expensive version is a dual-motor four-wheel drive model with a CLTC range of 700 kilometers.

The G6 can be charged from 0 to 80 percent in as little as 20 minutes, with combined energy consumption as low as 13.2 kWh per 100 km.

The model is equipped with battery cells from 's local rival CALB and battery packs produced by Xpeng's plant in Wuhan, Hubei, according to a previous regulatory filing.

In terms of performance, the lowest-priced Xpeng G6 can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.6 seconds, while the highest-priced 4WD version is 3.9 seconds.

XNGP is an all-scenario assisted driving system, and Xpeng aims to have it provide driving assistance in all scenarios including highways, city roads, internal campus roads, and parking lots.

On June 15, Xpeng announced that the urban part of the system, City NGP (Navigation Guided Pilot), became available in Beijing after Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Shanghai.

Xpeng announced at today's launch event that XNGP will cover an additional 50 Chinese cities in the second half of the year, with the goal of being available in 200 cities next year.

The G6 show cars and vehicles for test drives are already available in Xpeng showrooms in China, and deliveries of the model will begin in July.

Xpeng also said today that the G6 is based on Chinese and European five-star safety standards and that deliveries in Europe will also begin next year.

Xpeng restarted its European expansion, once on hold, with the launch of the G9 and the new P7 in Europe in February.

The G6 will be crucial for Xpeng to boost weak sales, which fell to 5,218 units in January and have only recovered to just over 7,000 units in the past three months.

The G6 will be a hot seller in China's new-energy SUV market in the RMB 200,000 to 300,000 range, and will enable Xpeng's total deliveries to grow well above the industry's pace in the third quarter, the company's management said in a May 24 analyst call following its first-quarter earnings announcement.

Xpeng management also said at the time that it had set aside about two months between the start of production and delivery of the G6, a model that Xpeng hopes will reach more than double the sales of the P7i.

This means that Xpeng management expects monthly sales of the G6 to reach 6,000-8,000 units, Deutsche Bank analyst Edison Yu's team said in a May 30 research note.

Xpeng shares up nearly 20% this week ahead of G6 launch

Xpeng's (NYSE: XPEV) highly anticipated new SUV, the G6, a (NASDAQ: TSLA) Model Y competitor, will go on sale in China in about 10 hours. Ahead of that, investors are clearly excited.

Xpeng's Hong Kong-traded stock was up 4.72 percent to HK$46.90 as of press time, giving it a cumulative gain of more than 18 percent since Monday.

The Chinese electric vehicle (EV) company's US-traded ADRs rose 7.29 percent to $11.78 at yesterday's close, giving it an 18.99 percent gain for the week.

The biggest catalyst driving the rally in Xpeng shares this week is the upcoming launch of the G6.

Xpeng will hold the launch event of the G6 starting at 8 pm Beijing time (8 am US Eastern time) on June 29, and it posted a Weibo early this morning saying that everything is in place for the event.

Xpeng gave the G6 its debut on the first day of the Shanghai auto show on April 18, saying the G6 is the ultimate form of car before full autonomous driving is achieved.

The model is based on the 800 V high-voltage platform and can get a 300-kilometer range in as little as 10 minutes of charge, Xpeng said at the time. The company's other 800 V-based model is the flagship SUV G9.

Xpeng began pre-sales for the G6 on June 9, with pre-sale prices starting at RMB 225,000 ($31,090), significantly lower than the Tesla Model Y's starting price of RMB 263,900 in China.

The Xpeng G6 received more than 25,000 orders within 72 hours of the start of pre-sales, the company announced on Weibo on June 12.

The G6 show cars were already available at Xpeng stores, and the model would officially launch on June 29 with deliveries starting in July, the company said earlier this month.

Referring to the practices of other local Chinese EV companies, Xpeng will likely announce a lower final pricing than the pre-sale price when the G6 officially launches today, thus providing consumers with a surprise that exceeds expectations.

The Xpeng G6 is an all-electric mid-size SUV with a length, width and height of 4,753 mm, 1,920 mm and 1,650 mm, respectively, and a wheelbase of 2,890 mm, a regulatory filing from March showed.

For comparison, the Tesla Model Y has a length, width and height of 4,750 mm, 1,921 mm and 1,624 mm, respectively, and a wheelbase of 2,890 mm.

The G6 will be a hot seller in China's new energy SUV market priced in the RMB 200,000 to 300,000 range and will enable Xpeng's total deliveries to grow well above the industry in the third quarter, the company's management said in a call with analysts after announcing its first-quarter earnings on May 24.

In the view of Wall Street analysts, the G6 will be critical to boosting Xpeng's sluggish sales.

"With margins and cash burn looking materially worse following 1Q earnings, we believe management may be making its last stand with the G6," Deutsche Bank analyst Edison Yu's team said in a research note sent to investors on May 30.

Xpeng management said in a May 24 conference call that it had set aside about two months between the start of production and delivery of the G6, and that Xpeng wanted the model to reach more than twice the sales of the P7i.

This means, according to Yu's team, that Xpeng management expects the G6 to sell 6,000-8,000 units a month.

The G6 needs to be successful for XPeng to be truly relevant to the market again, the team said.

China NEV insurance registrations for week ending Jun 25: Tesla 16,700, Li Auto 7,500, Nio 3,200

For the week of June 19 to June 25, (NASDAQ: LI) sold 7,500 units, continuing to lead among China's new car-making brands, the company said today on Weibo.

As of June 25, Li Auto has sold 27,300 units this month and is on track to reach its 30,000-unit monthly sales goal, it said.

Li Auto didn't explain what that weekly sales tally was based on, but apparently they are insurance registrations. The company had suspended sharing those numbers in May, but has since resumed sharing them.

Nio (NYSE: NIO) sold 3,200 units last week and 8,000 units from June 1 to June 25, according to figures shared by Li Auto.

Notably, June 22 to June 24 was a three-day Dragon Boat Festival holiday, and June 25 was a Sunday, but a working day after the holiday.

Nio's weekly sales have continued to grow over the past three weeks, as deliveries of new models began. It was 1,500 units in the week of June 5 to June 11 and 2,000 units in the week of June 12 to June 18.

Nio officially launched the new ES6 on May 24 and the ET5 Touring on June 15.

Deliveries of the new ES6 began on the night of the launch on May 24, and deliveries of the ET5 Touring began on June 16.

In addition to these two new models, Nio will also begin deliveries of the new ES8 on June 28, which was launched on Nio Day 2022 on December 24, 2022.

When Nio reported first-quarter earnings on June 9, it guided for second-quarter deliveries of between 23,000 and 25,000 vehicles, meaning it expects to deliver between 10,187 and 12,187 vehicles in June.

On June 20, Nio signed a share subscription agreement with Abu Dhabi-based investment firm CYVN Holdings, which will invest a total of about $1.1 billion in it.

(NASDAQ: TSLA) sold 16,700 units in China last week and 57,300 units from June 1 to June 25, according to figures shared by Li Auto.

In the two weeks prior to last week, Tesla sold 16,400 units and 14,500 units respectively in China.

From June 1 to June 25, Tesla was the top-selling premium brand in China, surpassing Mercedes-Benz's 52,100 units and above Audi's 51,600 units, according to a table by Li Auto.

On June 16, Tesla announced that Chinese consumers who purchase and take delivery of an already produced rear-wheel drive version of the Model 3 this month will receive an insurance subsidy of RMB 8,000 ($1,110).

XPeng plans to launch right-hand drive model in Hong Kong next year, report says

XPeng (NYSE: XPEV) is reportedly setting its sights on Hong Kong, after entering the European market.

Guangzhou-based XPeng plans to launch a right-hand drive model in Hong Kong next year to compete with well-established rivals like , the South China Morning Post said in a report yesterday.

XPeng would offer a vehicle distinct from existing EVs on the streets of Hong Kong that will appeal to local customers with its advanced technology and unique design, reinforcing its go-global strategy, the report quoted Brian Gu, vice chairman and president of the EV maker, as saying.

The XPeng right-hand drive model will probably hit the Hong Kong market in late 2024, Gu said.

This marks the first step for one of China's major EV makers to enter the Hong Kong market with a right-hand drive model, the report said, adding that XPeng's domestic rivals -- (NYSE: NIO) and (NASDAQ: LI) -- have not yet announced plans to sell EVs in Hong Kong.

NIO, based in Shanghai, is currently focusing its international efforts on Europe, and Li Auto, based in Beijing, has not yet begun to venture into international markets.

Right-hand drive is a large segment of the overall EV market, and XPeng is determined to build itself into a strong global EV company, the South China Morning Post quoted Gu as saying.

"By the time we enter, we will probably face pretty significant competition," he said in a keynote session at the South China Morning Post's China Conference: Hong Kong 2023.

"But we do feel that our products will have a different appeal. We want to make sure that the technologies we develop in China can be made available in Hong Kong as well," he added.

On February 3, XPeng announced the launch of its two latest EVs in the European market, the G9 flagship SUV and the new P7 sports sedan, marking the restart of an overseas expansion that XPeng had suspended for much of last year.

He Xiaopeng, the company's chairman and CEO, said on Weibo on June 18 that the company would launch "version 2.0" of its overseas expansion efforts starting in the third quarter with the delivery of the P7 and G9.

After that, XPeng will accelerate its entry into more markets, he said.

Unlike most of the models exported, XPeng expects to bring high-quality, high-tech vehicles to overseas markets and expects to see more and more Chinese brand vehicles around the world, he said.

Earlier today, XPeng announced that it has selected the ACCESS Twine for Car (Twine4Car) in-car infotainment solution to provide apps and games, including prominent streaming services, for its new range of EVs.

This will start with the all-electric XPeng P7 sedan, with European deliveries set to begin this summer, the company said.

XPeng sales in China have been weak over the past year, due to product switches and a weakening in overall EV demand.

The company delivered 7,506 vehicles in May, down 25.87 percent year-on-year but up 6.03 percent from April.

In the January-May period, XPeng delivered 32,815 vehicles, down 38.88 percent year-on-year, according to data monitored by CnEVPost.

By the end of May, XPeng's cumulative deliveries since its inception were 291,525 vehicles.

Providing a localized infotainment system is a challenge for Chinese electric vehicle (EV) startups entering the European market, and XPeng (NYSE: XPEV) has chosen to work with a supplier that offers a proven solution to meet the needs of local consumers.

XPeng has selected the ACCESS Twine for Car (Twine4Car) in-car infotainment solution to provide apps and games for its new range of EVs, including prominent streaming services, the Chinese EV company announced today.

This will start with the all-electric XPeng P7 sedan, with European deliveries set to begin this summer, the company said.

Moving forward, existing XPeng drivers will also have the option to upgrade their cars with an over-the-air (OTA) software update to include Access' Twine4Car.

XPeng has ramped up its expansion into overseas markets this year, after slowing that effort last year.

On February 3, XPeng announced the launch of its two newest EVs to the European market, the G9 flagship SUV and the new P7 sports sedan, and allowed consumers in Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands and Sweden to order them.

On June 18, XPeng chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng said on Weibo that the company will launch "version 2.0" of its efforts in overseas markets starting in the third quarter with the delivery of the P7 and G9.

After that, XPeng will accelerate its entry into more countries, he said.

Unlike most of the exported models, XPeng expects to bring high-quality, high-tech vehicles to overseas markets and expects to see more and more Chinese brand vehicles around the world, he said.

The Twine4Car platform is the industry's leading automotive content and application services solution for connected car infotainment, enabling car companies to offer branded entertainment services, according to XPeng.

"We selected ACCESS Twine4Car as our in-vehicle infotainment provider to create a mobility experience that's more intuitive and enjoyable—our vehicles are designed to move people emotionally as well as physically," said Eric Xu, vice president of international markets at XPeng.

By using a more thoughtful approach to mobility, XPeng hopes to provide a higher level of sophistication and ease for drivers in Europe, said Xu.

The Twine4Car app store includes some of the most used and easily recognizable social and productivity apps that allow drivers and passengers to work and play in the car while parked or charging, according to an XPeng press release.

ACCESS also offers a new game portal for XPeng that includes console-grade games with the latest high-compression streaming technology, allowing users to play even on low-speed connections.

XPeng signs partnership deal with home appliance giant Midea’s auto parts unit

XPeng (NYSE: XPEV) today signed a strategic partnership agreement with Welling, the automotive parts division of Chinese home appliance giant Midea Group, to collaborate on thermal management products.

Welling will provide thermal management products, including electric compressors, for the entire XPeng model line, according to a Midea press release.

Electric compressors improve energy efficiency through cooling, heating and internal heat transfer, and play a critical role in battery life, charging speed and range, according to the release.

Welling's products cover a wide range of areas including electric compressors, integrated modules for thermal management, drive motors, EPS steering motors, and electronic water pumps and is committed to providing core components and system solutions for green mobility, according to the release.

Midea is one of the largest home appliance manufacturers in China and has been involved in the vehicle components field for 20 years.

Midea entered the commercial vehicle sector in 2003 and has since acquired several bus companies and built production bases in Kunming and Changsha, with bus and specialized chassis manufacturing capabilities.

On May 18, 2021, Welling announced three product lines for its automotive components business, including drive systems, thermal management systems, and assisted driving systems.

"We want to be the fastest-responding supplier in the industry, keeping up with the speed of automakers," the group's vice president and president of Midea Industrial Technologies, Fu Yongjun, said at the time.

On February 16, 2022, Welling announced the start of construction of its new energy vehicle (NEV) parts production base in Anqing, Anhui province, with a total investment of about RMB 11 billion ($1.5 billion).

The project will be mainly used to produce products including power steering motors, electric compressors for NEVs and drive motors, and will be equipped with R&D centers for thermal management, main drive and assisted driving systems and national laboratories, Welling said at the time.

The project will have an annual production capacity of 60 million sets and an annual output value of RMB 40 billion after completion, according to the company.

The first phase of this Anqing NEV parts base was been put into operation in early 2023 and will be able to meet stable production and delivery demand, Midea said today.

XPeng has seen weak deliveries over the past year, as it switches its product array to new models.

The company delivered 7,506 vehicles in May, down 25.87 percent year-on-year but up 6.03 percent from April, the fourth month to see sequential growth.

XPeng began pre-sales of the new SUV G6 on June 9, and the model will be officially launched on June 29, with deliveries starting in July.

In the week of June 12 to June 18, sold 7,800 units, continuing to lead among China's new car makers, the company said today on Weibo.

As of June 18, Li Auto had sold 19,800 units this month, and the company will aim to achieve a monthly sales target of more than 30,000 this month, it said.

Li Auto didn't explain what that weekly sales tally was based on, but apparently they were insurance registrations. The company had suspended sharing those numbers in May, but has since resumed sharing them.

Li Auto delivered 28,277 vehicles in May, up 145.97 percent year-on-year and up 10.11 percent from April, the third consecutive month to exceed the 20,000-unit mark.

Li Auto's current least expensive model, the five-seat Li L7, achieved its second consecutive month of more than 10,000 deliveries in May, the company said on June 1.

On Li Auto's Family Tech Day event on June 17, the Li L7 sold more than 1,000 units in a single day for the first time, the company's founder, chairman and CEO Li Xiang said on June 18.

(NASDAQ: TSLA) sold 14,500 units in the week of June 12 to June 18, lower than the 16,400 units sold in the previous week, according to figures shared by Li Auto.

From June 1 to June 18, Tesla sold 40,600 units in China, the highest number of vehicles, including internal combustion engine vehicles, for premium brands.

NIO (NYSE: NIO) was 2,000 units last week, up from 1,500 units the week before.

Between June 1 and June 18, NIO sold 4,800 units.

NIO officially launched the new ES6 on May 24 and rolled out the ET5 Touring on June 15.

The company had produced some of the vehicles in the designer-recommended configuration combinations for quick delivery prior to the launch of both models.

Deliveries of the new ES6 began on the night of the May 24 launch, and deliveries of the ET5 Touring began on June 16.

(NYSE: XPEV) was at 1,600 units last week and 3,800 units from June 1 to June 18.

XPeng CEO sees China EV landscape far from set

will enter an accelerating positive feedback loop starting in the third quarter of this year and will see faster growth from the third quarter of next year to the end of 2025, XPeng's CEO said.

Electric vehicle (EV) startups see ups and downs in fortunes as the industry grows rapidly in China. XPeng (NYSE: XPEV) is one of the EV makers that has been in a downward spiral over the past year, but its CEO doesn't think it's a big deal.

In a speech at the China Auto Blue Book Forum in Wuhan, central China's Hubei province, XPeng chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng argued that the landscape of China's EV industry is not yet set and that there's no need to worry too much about winning or losing in the moment.

"Whether it's joint ventures, state-owned enterprises, or private companies, including the new car makers, we see very fierce competition in the whole industry," he said.

"In fact, I don't think we need to worry too much about this competition. First of all, has anyone already got the qualification to stay at the table today?" he said.

"At least, I don't think there's a single company in China, not a single startup, that will definitively be on the table for the next one," he added.

Citing the development of China's Internet industry over the past 20 years, he said he had been thinking from 2007-2010 about which products would qualify to be part of the mobile Internet end game.

"In fact, we later found out that there was no answer to that question," he said.

None of the products had a chance of qualifying for that from 2007 to 2010, and that qualification came in 2010 and later with the emergence of big hardware and software players, he said.

XPeng has seen strong delivery growth in 2021, with deliveries reaching an all-time high of 16,000 units in December 2021.

Its deliveries have continued to be weak since the second half of last year, dropping to 5,218 units in January of this year. In the past three months, it has delivered at slightly above 7,000 units each month.

Its local counterpart (NYSE: NIO) fared a bit better last year, but also faced a similarly sluggish delivery as it switched products this year, delivering just 6,155 vehicles in May.

In contrast, (NASDAQ: LI) has maintained strong deliveries since last year, with a record 28,277 vehicles delivered in May.

It's worth noting that Li Auto's current models are all extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), which are essentially plug-in hybrids and have a much larger market space. Both XPeng and NIO only offer battery electric vehicles, which are in a fast-growing but small market.

In his speech today, Mr. He said he could foresee a large number of hybrid models in China in the next two years, especially in the family car segment.

"Because everyone sees the success, they will follow. Because they are following, a large number of models will focus on the same place. It's a very interesting thing," he said.

He stressed that automakers should have a long-term vision. "I think in the automotive space, for everything, you have to think about the layout for ten to twenty years, it's not possible to achieve a big change in three years' time," he said.

XPeng has faced many challenges in the last year, but the positive feedback for the company will accelerate in the full year starting in the third quarter of this year, he said.

From the third quarter of next year to the end of 2025, XPeng will enter a hyper-speed positive feedback loop, he said, adding that this is based on XPeng's overall layout.
