Tesla announced today that it is opening its Supercharger network in the Chinese mainland on a pilot basis to other brands of electric vehicles (EVs), following its practice in more than 10 other markets.

The EV maker is initially opening 10 Supercharger stations for 37 non-Tesla models, according to an announcement it posted on WeChat.

Notably, the pilot is currently limited to Beijing and Shanghai, with each city offering five Supercharger stations to participate in the pilot.

The 37 non-Tesla models include the NIO ES6, NIO EC6, P7, Li ONE, 001, BYD Han EV, BYD Tang EV, and Polestar 2.

In addition to the Supercharger stations, Tesla has opened 120 destination charging stations on a pilot basis, covering 25 provinces and cities in the Chinese mainland.

To date, Tesla has more than 1,600 Supercharger stations in the Chinese mainland, offering more than 10,000 Superchargers, according to the announcement.

It also has more than 700 destination charging stations in the Chinese mainland, offering more than 2,000 charging piles.

At the end of 2021, Tesla opened its charging network to non-Tesla vehicles on a pilot basis in Europe, and the service is now available to owners in more than 10 countries and regions worldwide, the company said.

Now, owners of non-Tesla-branded EVs in the Chinese mainland can also enjoy an efficient, convenient and dense Tesla charging network, it said.

Tesla hopes its open and innovative business logic will bring together more industry partners to accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy, it added.

Tesla's revenue from China continued to grow in the first quarter, although its global revenue declined in the quarter compared to the fourth quarter.

In the first quarter, Tesla's revenue from China was $4.891 billion, up 5.18 percent from a year ago and up 6.86 percent from the fourth quarter of last year, according to a 10-Q filing it made with the US Securities and Exchange Commission today.

The US electric vehicle (EV) maker reported total revenue of $23.3 billion in the global market in the first quarter, up 24.38 percent year-on-year, but down 4.07 percent from the fourth quarter of last year.

This means that in the first quarter, the Chinese market contributed 20.97 percent of Tesla's revenue, up from 18.82 percent in the fourth quarter and down from 24.79 percent in the same period last year.

The US market contributed $11.2 billion, or 48 percent, to Tesla's total revenue in the first quarter.

International markets other than China contributed $7.2 billion, or 31 percent, of Tesla's total revenue in the first quarter.

Tesla announced on April 2 that it delivered 422,875 units worldwide in the first quarter, up 36.39 percent year-on-year and up 4.34 percent from the fourth quarter.

The deliveries beat Wall Street analysts' expectations of 421,200 units, with deliveries of Tesla's cheaper Model 3 with the Model Y exceeding expectations.

Tesla delivered 412,180 Model 3 and Model Y units worldwide in the first quarter, above market expectations of 408,500 units. A total of 10,695 Model S and Model X units were delivered in the first quarter, below expectations of 16,700 units.

In the first quarter, Tesla sold 229,322 China-made vehicles globally, up 25.88 percent from 182,174 in the same period last year, according to data released earlier this month by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

This means that 54 percent of Tesla's global deliveries in the first quarter were made at the Shanghai plant.

In China, Tesla delivered 137,429 vehicles in the first quarter, up 26.90 percent year-on-year, according to data from the CPCA monitored by CnEVPost.

Tesla's Shanghai plant exported 91,893 vehicles in the first quarter, up 24.39 percent year-on-year.

Tesla has begun production in Shanghai of the Model Y crossover that will be sold in Canada this year, Reuters said in a report today, citing people with knowledge of the plan and a production memo.

It will be the first time the company will ship cars from China to North America, a move that will connect Tesla's largest and most cost-effective factory in the world with its biggest market, North America, the report said.

Tesla launched a cheaper, rear-wheel-drive Model Y in Canada just this past weekend, starting at C$59,990, C$10,000 less than the long-range version.

Tesla's website shows that Canadian customers can take delivery of the new Model Y between May and July.

The electric vehicle (EV) maker's Shanghai plant began production of the Canadian version of the Model Y earlier this month, Reuters said, citing a person familiar with the matter. The vehicles are being designed and tested for export to North America, with a goal of producing nearly 9,000 units this quarter, the report said.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk told analysts last week that the company's Shanghai plant has the lowest cost structure of any of its factories, the report noted.

Tesla's factory in Shanghai makes the Model 3 and the Model Y. The plant not only supplies vehicles to local consumers, but is also an export hub for the EV maker.

The company delivered 76,663 vehicles in China in March, and the Shanghai plant exported 12,206 vehicles, according to data released earlier this month by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

It delivered 422,875 vehicles worldwide in the first quarter, including 412,180 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles and 10,695 Model S and Model X vehicles, according to data it announced April 2.

In the first quarter, Tesla sold 229,322 China-made vehicles, contributing 54 percent of its global deliveries.

Tesla's Shanghai plant exported 91,893 vehicles in the first quarter, up 24.39 percent year-on-year, according to data monitored by CnEVPost.

Insurance registrations for week ending Apr 16: Tesla 12,500, Li Auto 6,300, NIO 700

NIO's weak performance may be because it is on the eve of multiple product switches, as it will begin deliveries of the new ET7, new ES6, EC7 in May and will begin deliveries of the new ES8 in June.

(NASDAQ: TSLA) and (NASDAQ: LI) kept sales strong last week, while NIO (NYSE: NIO) was weak, the latest data show.

Li Auto sold 6,300 units in the week of April 10 to April 16, far outpacing China's other new car-making brands, the automaker said in an April 19 post to its WeChat account.

Li Auto didn't say what the sales figure was based on, but it was apparently insurance registrations. Previously, we had access to the data every Tuesday, and Li Auto's practice was to share some of it on Wednesdays.

The main source that provides data on auto insurance registrations in China stopped sharing that data this month, but Li Auto continues to share some of it.

Tesla sold 12,500 units last week, according to the data table shared by Li Auto. Tesla's sales in the previous week were 6,973, according to data previously shared by Li Auto.

NIO sold about 700 units last week, according to the data. The electric vehicle maker sold 1,316 units in the previous week.

NIO's weak performance may be because it is on the eve of multiple product switches. It launched the new ET7 and unveiled the new ES6 on the first day of the Shanghai auto show on April 18, with deliveries both set to begin in May.

In addition to the new ET7 and the new ES6, NIO will also start delivering the EC7 coupe SUV in May and will start delivering the new ES8 in June, according to plans it previously annouced.

sold 1,300 units last week, up from 904 units the week before, according to data shared by Li Auto. XPeng unveiled the new SUV G6 on the first day of the Shanghai auto show on April 18, but pricing information is unknown.

sold 1,600 units last week, up from 1,476 the week before. Leapmotor sold 1,700 units last week, up from 1,157 the week before. Neta sold 1,800 units last week, up from 1,526 the week before.

Among premium brands, BMW sold 14,500 cars last week including internal combustion engine vehicles as well as NEVs, Mercedes-Benz 13,400 and Audi 12,600, according to data shared by Li Auto.

Separately, retail sales of NEVs in China from April 1-16 were 223,000 units, up 89 percent year-on-year and up 13 percent from the same period last month, according to data released yesterday by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

Considering that NEV retail sales were 91,000 from April 1 to April 9, this means that during the week of April 10 to April 16, NEV retail sales in China were 132,000 units, up 45 percent from the previous week.

From April 10-16, retail sales of all passenger vehicles in China were 335,328 units, up 80 percent year-on-year and up 23 percent from the same period last month, according to the CPCA.
