Figures released earlier this month by the CPCA show that Tesla sold 75,842 China-made vehicles in April, including 35,886 units exported.

That means Tesla delivered 39,956 vehicles in China in April, with 47.32 percent of the vehicles produced at the Shanghai plant being exported.

The US electric vehicle maker's plant in Shanghai currently only produces the Model 3 as well as the Model Y. Including exports, the two models sold 26,783 and 49,059 units in April, respectively, according to the CPCA.

Today's figures mean that Tesla's Shanghai plant exported 13,587 China-made Model 3s and 22,299 China-made Model Ys in April.

In China, Model Y sales in April were up 2,687.50 percent from 960 units in the same month last year, but down 51.29 percent from 54,937 units in March.

Model 3 sales in China in April were up 2,290.58 percent from 552 units a year ago, but down 39.26 percent from 21,726 units in March.

These changes are due to the fact that Tesla's sales in China fell sharply last April due to the Covid lockdown in Shanghai, and its pattern of producing vehicles primarily for export in the first half of each quarter.

In the rankings released today by the CPCA, the Model Y was the third best-selling new energy SUV in April.

BYD Song and BYD Yuan Plus were the top 2 best-selling new energy SUVs in April with 33,007 and 28,931 retail sales, respectively.

From January to April, the Model Y sold 121,407 units, up 60.5 percent year-on-year, and was the second best-selling new energy SUV during this period, according to the CPCA's rankings.

The BYD Song was the top-selling new energy SUV from January to April, with 174,422 units, up 83.0 percent year-on-year.

Among the top 10 new energy sedans in April, the Tesla Model 3 came in at No. 7, while NIO's (NYSE: NIO) ET5 sedan failed to make the list.

Tesla Model Y with BYD battery has started production in Germany, report says

Since this week, the Model Y with BYD battery has been produced at Tesla's Gigafactory in Grünheide, Germany, according to a German media report.  |  TSLA.US BYDDY.US | BYD HK

Starting this week, the Model Y with BYD battery has been produced at Tesla's Gigafactory in Grünheide, Germany, local media outlet Teslamag said in a report Thursday.

The model is a rear-wheel drive version and the batteries will not be produced by Tesla itself, but by BYD in China, according to the report.

This is Tesla's fourth battery supplier after Panasonic, LG Energy Solution and , the report noted.

Last August, Tesla applied for and received European type approval for the Model Y with BYD's lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, which at the time had a 55-kWh capacity and a 440 km WLTP range, the report said.

Tesla currently specifies a WLTP range of 455 km for the Model Y with standard rims and 430 km with 20-inch wheels, the report noted.

In February 2022, rumors surfaced that Tesla had placed an order with BYD's battery manufacturing division, FinDreams Battery, for blade batteries for 204,000 vehicles per year.

On August 10, 2022, Chinese media outlet Sina Tech cited multiple sources as saying that BYD's blade battery supplies to Tesla had begun to be delivered to the latter's plant in Berlin, Germany, the first Tesla Gigafactory to apply BYD batteries.

On March 13, South Korea's Korea Economic Daily reported that Tesla had decided not to use BYD's batteries due to quality problems caused by a series of fire incidents with the latter's LFP batteries.

A BYD spokesperson, responding to CnEVPost's request for comment at the time, said the information was untrue and not in line with the actual situation.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk later also tweeted that the media report was false and that Tesla's relationship with BYD was positive.

BYD is not only the largest new energy vehicle (NEV) in China, but also one of the largest battery manufacturers in the world.

BYD installed 21.5 GWh of power batteries in the first quarter, ranking second in the world with a 16.2 percent share, according to data released by South Korean market research firm SNE Research on May 3.

CATL continued to rank first in the world with a 35.0 percent share in the first quarter, and was the only one with a share of more than 30 percent.

Tesla has begun production in Shanghai of the Model Y crossover that will be sold in Canada this year, Reuters said in a report today, citing people with knowledge of the plan and a production memo.

It will be the first time the company will ship cars from China to North America, a move that will connect Tesla's largest and most cost-effective factory in the world with its biggest market, North America, the report said.

Tesla launched a cheaper, rear-wheel-drive Model Y in Canada just this past weekend, starting at C$59,990, C$10,000 less than the long-range version.

Tesla's website shows that Canadian customers can take delivery of the new Model Y between May and July.

The electric vehicle (EV) maker's Shanghai plant began production of the Canadian version of the Model Y earlier this month, Reuters said, citing a person familiar with the matter. The vehicles are being designed and tested for export to North America, with a goal of producing nearly 9,000 units this quarter, the report said.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk told analysts last week that the company's Shanghai plant has the lowest cost structure of any of its factories, the report noted.

Tesla's factory in Shanghai makes the Model 3 and the Model Y. The plant not only supplies vehicles to local consumers, but is also an export hub for the EV maker.

The company delivered 76,663 vehicles in China in March, and the Shanghai plant exported 12,206 vehicles, according to data released earlier this month by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

It delivered 422,875 vehicles worldwide in the first quarter, including 412,180 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles and 10,695 Model S and Model X vehicles, according to data it announced April 2.

In the first quarter, Tesla sold 229,322 China-made vehicles, contributing 54 percent of its global deliveries.

Tesla's Shanghai plant exported 91,893 vehicles in the first quarter, up 24.39 percent year-on-year, according to data monitored by CnEVPost.

Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) recently lowered the prices of its Model 3 sedan and Model Y crossover in several markets around the world, raising concerns about whether it do the same in the Chinese mainland.

Grace Tao, Tesla's vice president of external affairs, shared several charts on Weibo Friday showing that all versions of the Model 3 and Model Y available in the Chinese mainland are priced lower than in all other markets.

Tao shared the charts without any comment. Whether Tesla will continue to cut prices in the Chinese mainland will be something to watch in the coming days.

Chinese car companies are currently busy preparing for the Shanghai auto show, which will begin on April 18 and run through April 27. The organizers of the show have released a booth map that shows Tesla will be absent.

The low prices enjoyed by consumers in the Chinese mainland are apparently due to the local production of the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y.

On August 15 last year, Tao said that 99.9 percent of the team at Tesla's Shanghai factory was made up of Chinese and that the supply chain was more than 95 percent localized.

Tesla's factory in Shanghai currently produces only the Model 3 as well as the Model Y. The plant not only supplies locally, but is also an export center for Tesla.

The Model 3 is currently offered in two versions in the Chinese mainland -- the entry-level rear-wheel drive version and the dual-motor all-wheel drive Model 3 Performance.

The Model Y is available in three versions in the Chinese mainland -- the entry-level rear-wheel drive Model Y, the dual-motor all-wheel drive Model Y Long Range, and the dual-motor all-wheel drive Model Y Performance.

Here are more charts created by CnEVPost based on images shared by Tao yesterday.

Song was the best-selling SUV in China in February with 51,592 retail sales, and the Model Y ranked No. 2 with 25,526 units.

TSLA.US

The (NASDAQ: TSLA) Model Y was the No. 2 best-selling SUV in China in February, with the BYD (OTCMKTS: BYDDY) Song taking the top spot by a significant margin.

Model Y retail sales in China in February were 25,526 units, up 37.3 percent from 18,593 units a year ago, according to data released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

The BYD Song topped the list with 51,592 retail sales in February, up 110.3 percent from 24,532 units in the same month last year.

Regulatory filing: Tesla removing radars from China-made Model Y

In most parts of the world, the Model 3 and Model Y are already based on the camera-only Vision solution.

TSLA.US

Tesla is removing all the radars from the China-made Model Y crossover, following its practice in the US market.

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology today released several documents, including a list of models that will be allowed to be sold in China, as well as change filings for some existing models, with the China-made Model Y included in the latter.

The public can submit feedback on these documents between March 9 and March 15 if they have comments.

Four models of Tesla -- TSL6480BEVAR0, TSL6480BEVAR2, TSL6480BEVBA4 and TSL6480BEVBA5 -- entered the change declaration catalog.

Their pages do not show Model Y, but previous information shows that all four model numbers are the crossover.

These four models of Tesla have added the expression "no radar" to their changed parameter values, according to their filing pages.

Tesla previously announced that it was beginning the transition to Tesla Vision by removing the radars from the Model 3 and Model Y, and plans to remove the device from the Model S and Model X as well.

Today, in most parts of the world, the Model 3 and Model Y are already based on the camera-only Tesla Vision solution.

The ultrasonic radars that are being removed by Tesla are typically placed on the front and rear bumpers or on the side of the vehicle to measure the distance of the vehicle from obstructions to help in scenarios including parking.

Tesla has a factory in Shanghai that makes the Model 3 sedan and Model Y. Tesla doesn't appear to have plans to remove the radar from the Model 3 for now, as it would need to declare it if it wants to do so.

Chinese consumers typically prefer roomier SUVs when buying cars, making the Model Y a popular choice in the country.

The Model Y sold 315,314 units at retail in China in full-year 2022, placing it No. 1 in the ranking of high-end SUV sales with a starting price above RMB 300,000 ($43,050), according to a list published by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) on January 11.

In February, Tesla delivered 33,923 vehicles in China and exported 40,479 units from its Shanghai plant, according to the CPCA data released yesterday. Model 3 and Model Y sales breakdowns in China in February are currently unavailable.

On March 1, Tesla announced that the elastic and damping members in the suspension system of the China-made Model Y have been optimized to reduce bumps at low speeds and allow for a more stable ride at high speeds.

Giga Shanghai's Model Ys produced since January 1, 2023, are equipped with the updated suspension system, Tesla said.
