Tesla offers up to $6,200 discounts for Model S and Model X in China

Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) is offering big discounts in China for its two higher-priced models that aren't made locally, likely in part because sales of those vehicles being imported to China are performing below expectations.

The US electric vehicle (EV) maker today announced what it calls an inventory car purchase incentive for the Model S and Model X on Weibo, with discounts of up to 45,000 yuan ($6,200), even though the prices for both models remain unchanged on Tesla's website.

Prices start at RMB 773,900 for the dual-motor all-wheel drive Model S and RMB 988,900 for the tri-motor all-wheel drive Model S Plaid, as per Tesla's published discounted prices.

Compared to the prices displayed on the Tesla China website of RMB 808,900 and RMB 1,028,900, these two versions of the Model S offer discounts of RMB 35,000 and RMB 40,000 respectively.

The discounted prices start at RMB 863,900 for the Model X dual motor AWD version and RMB 1,013,900 for the Model X Plaid tri-motor AWD version.

This is RMB 35,000 and RMB 45,000 lower than the RMB 898,900 and RMB 1,058,900, respectively, displayed on Tesla's China website.

In addition to these cash offers, Tesla is also encouraging owners to refer friends to purchase the two models.

If a customer purchases the Model S and Model X on the recommendation of someone else, they will receive an additional RMB 7,000 bonus, free Supercharging benefits for 3 or 6 years, and 90 days of free Enhanced Autopilot (EAP) access. The referrer will then receive 48,000 bonus points that can be redeemed for Supercharging miles.

On January 6, Tesla announced the prices of the Model S and Model X in China at the same time as it significantly reduced the prices of the locally produced Model 3 and Model Y.

At that time, the starting price of Model S was RMB 789,900 and Model S Plaid was RMB 1,009,900. Model X started at RMB 879,900 and Model X Plaid was 1,039,900.

On February 28, six new Tesla Model S and Model X entered Chinese customs, the first time these two models were imported into China. In mid-March, a new batch of 867 new Tesla Model S and Model X vehicles were imported into China.

On March 27, Tesla announced that deliveries of the new Model S and Model X in China officially began.

On May 5, the prices of the full line of both the new Model S and Model X models in China were raised by RMB 19,000. Since then, the prices of both models in China have remained unchanged.

Tesla has a factory in Shanghai that produces the Model 3 and Model Y. The factory delivered 77,695 vehicles in May, including 42,508 in China and 35,187 for export, according to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

The Model Y sold 31,054 units at retail in China in May and was the best-selling SUV for the month, according to a ranking by the CPCA.

Starting May 5, consumers who order a new Model S or Model X and have the vehicle delivered on or before September 30 will receive three years of free supercharging benefits, according to information on Tesla's China website.

The benefits apply only to the buyer's Tesla account where the order is placed and may not be shared with any other vehicle under that account or transferred to any other vehicle or account, the information shows.

The benefit also terminates if the vehicle is transferred to another person, Tesla said.

If the order date is met, but the delivery date is after September 30, the consumer will not be able to receive the benefit.

The vehicle must be a non-operating vehicle to qualify for this benefit, otherwise the vehicle cannot acquire or maintain this benefit.

Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) raised the prices of both of its more expensive models by about 2 percent in China, following a price hike three days ago for two less expensive locally produced models.

Prices for the new Model S and the entire Model X lineup were raised by RMB 19,000 ($2,750) in China, the latest information from Tesla's China website shows.

The latest starting price for the dual-motor all-wheel drive Model S in China is RMB 808,900, up RMB 19,000, or 2.41 percent, from RMB 789,900 previously, information monitored by CnEVPost shows.

On May 2, Tesla just raised the prices of its full lineup of Model 3 and Model Y in China, a less than 1 percent increase that means the move is more aimed at dispelling consumer wait-and-see sentiment.

Tesla has a factory in Shanghai that makes the Model 3 and Model Y, and their prices in China were all raised by 2,000 yuan at the time.

The company currently offers two versions of the Model 3 in China -- the rear-wheel-drive Model 3 and the dual-motor all-wheel-drive Model 3 Performance -- and three versions of the Model Y -- the entry version Model Y, Model Y Long Range, and Model Y Performance.

The two versions of the Model 3 currently start at RMB 231,900 and RMB 331,900 respectively, while the three versions of the Model Y start at RMB 263,900, RMB 313,900 and RMB 363,900 respectively.

Last month, Tesla lowered the prices of the Model 3 and the Model Y in several markets around the world, raising concerns about whether it would lower prices in China.

Tesla's move to raise the prices of all available models in China this week could help dispel some potential consumers' wait-and-see sentiment, which could benefit sales in the near term.

The electric vehicle maker delivered 76,663 vehicles in China in March and exported 12,206 from its Shanghai plant, according to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). April figures are expected to be available within days.

Tesla starts deliveries of new Model S and Model X in China

Deliveries of the new Model S and Model X have begun in the Chinese mainland, nine years after the first vehicle entered the country in 2014.  |  TSLA.US

Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) has started deliveries of the new Model S and Model X in China, although its China website shows expected delivery dates for both models in the second quarter.

Deliveries of the new Model S and Model X have begun in the Chinese mainland, nine years after the first Tesla vehicle entered the country in 2014, Tesla said today on Weibo.

Tesla did not provide any more information on Weibo, and its China website shows expected delivery dates for both models in the second quarter.

Here's a video Tesla shared on Weibo showing a large number of the new Model S and Model X being shipped to China.

On January 6, Tesla announced the prices of the new Model S and Model X, which are not produced locally, in China at the same time as it significantly reduced the prices of the Model 3 and Model Y.

The Tesla Model S is available in China in two versions, a regular version with dual motors and all-wheel drive, and a Plaid version with tri motors and all-wheel drive.

The Model S starts at RMB 789,900 ($114,790) and the Model S Plaid starts at RMB 1,009,900.

The Model X is also available in China in two versions, a regular version with dual-motor all-wheel drive and a Plaid version with tri-motor all-wheel drive.

The Model X starts at RMB 879,900 and the Model X Plaid starts at RMB 1,039,900.

On February 28, six imported Tesla pure electric vehicles, which were driven out of containers at the Nangang Terminal of Shanghai Yangshan Port, were inspected on site by customs officers, a previous report by Shanghai Securities News said.

On March 15, Tianjin Port Group said the latest batch of 867 Tesla new Model S and Model X vehicles arrived in Tianjin.

New batch of 867 new Tesla Model S and Model X imported to China

Six imported units of the new Model S and Model X arrived at Yangshan Port in Shanghai on February 28.

Tesla is sending more of the new Model S and Model X to China, as deliveries of the two more expensive models here get closer.

The latest shipment of 867 new Tesla Model S and Model X electric vehicles (EVs) arrived in Tianjin recently, according to a Weibo post by the Tianjin Port Group yesterday.

The vehicles came from San Francisco and arrived at the Tianjin Global Ro-Ro terminal on the ro-ro vessel Asia Beauty, according to the Weibo post.

The Weibo said these are the first imports of the new Tesla Model S and Model X into China, but it's worth noting that several of these Tesla models were already imported into China late last month.

On February 28, six imported Tesla pure electric vehicles, drove out of the containers at the Nangang terminal in Shanghai Yangshan Port to be inspected on site by customs officers, according to a previous report by Shanghai Securities News.

This is the first batch of the new Tesla Model S Plaid vehicles imported into China by sea since they were launched, according to the report by Shanghai Securities News.

Tesla unveiled the Model S Plaid in the US in September 2020 with three motors that can accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in 1.99 seconds. The company's CEO Elon Musk called it the fastest production car ever built.

In early June 2021, Tesla began deliveries of the model in the US and eliminated the more capable Plaid + model.

Musk said in late 2021 that the Model S Plaid could come to China around March 2022. However, that didn't become a reality.

On January 6, Tesla announced the prices of the new Model S and Model X in China, which are not produced locally, while significantly lowering the prices of the Model 3 and Model Y produced in China.

The Model S is available in China in two versions, a regular version with dual motors and all-wheel drive, and a Plaid version with tri motors and all-wheel drive, starting at RMB 789,900 ($114,620) and RMB 1,009,900 respectively.

The Model X is also available in China in two versions, the regular version with two-motor all-wheel drive and the Plaid version with tri-motor all-wheel drive, starting at RMB 879,900 and RMB 1,039,900, respectively.

Currently, the official website of Tesla China shows the expected delivery date for all versions of Model S and Model X in China in the second quarter.

Tesla has a factory in Shanghai that produces the Model 3 and Model Y. It sold 74,402 China-made vehicles in February, including 40,479 vehicles exported and 33,923 vehicles delivered in China, according to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

Tesla's deliveries in China in February included 25,526 Model Ys and 8,397 Model 3s, according to the CPCA.
