Zeekr delivers 10,620 vehicles in Jun, begins offering large purchase benefits

's premium electric vehicle (EV) brand Zeekr is back above the 10,000-unit mark in monthly deliveries and is starting to offer limited-time benefits for its flagship model to meet annual delivery targets.

Zeekr delivered 10,620 units in June, up 146.86 percent year-on-year and up 22.38 percent from May, according to data released today.

This is the fifth sequential increase in monthly deliveries for Zeekr. It delivered above 10,000 units each month in the fourth quarter of last year, but deliveries fell to 3,116 units in January, due in part to a plant shutdown for an upgrade.

In the second quarter, Zeekr delivered 27,399 vehicles, up 154.42 percent year-on-year and up 79.85 percent from the first quarter.

In the first half of the year, Zeekr delivered 42,633 vehicles, up 124.27 percent from 19,010 vehicles in the same period last year.

Zeekr aims to double its deliveries this year from last year to about 140,000 units, which means it will need to deliver an average of about 16,230 vehicles per month in the second half of this year.

At the end of June, Zeekr's cumulative deliveries since its inception stood at 120,581 vehicles, according to data monitored by CnEVPost.

Zeekr was officially launched as an independent company in March 2021, with its first model, the Zeekr 001, launched on April 15, 2021, and deliveries beginning in October 2021.

On November 1, 2022, Zeekr's second model, the Zeekr 009 MPV, was launched, and its deliveries began on January 15.

On April 12, Zeekr launched its third model, the Zeekr X, and its deliveries in China began on June 12.

To meet full-year sales targets and to address the increasingly competitive EV market, Zeekr today announced the start of a limited-time free option benefit for the Zeekr 001, valid from July-September.

Chinese consumers will receive a free blue exterior trim valued at RMB 6,000 ($830) with the purchase of the entire Zeekr 001 model line.

The Zeekr 001 is currently available in four versions -- WE with a 100-kWh battery pack, WE with an 86 kWh battery pack, ME with a 100 kWh battery pack and YOU with a 100 kWh battery pack, with starting prices of RMB 300,000, RMB 300,000, RMB 349,000 and RMB 349,000 respectively.

Customers who purchase the WE version in the third quarter will receive a free option fund worth RMB 28,000 to receive upgrades including a 100-kWh battery pack, dual-motor 4WD, or air suspension.

Customers who purchase the Zeekr 001 ME Edition will receive a free optional air suspension package worth RMB 28,000.

Customers who purchase the YOU Edition model will receive a free optional Z-Sport package worth RMB 35,000, according to Zeekr.

In addition, customers who purchase the Zeekr 001 YOU Edition can also receive free lifetime charging rights or one-time credits worth RMB 12,000.

Zeekr also offers limited-time loan offers for all models, including a 2-year 0 percent interest, or 5-year 1.99 percent low-interest finance package capped at RMB 200,000.

Li Auto delivers over 32,000 vehicles in Jun, CEO says

It's the practice for China's major electric vehicle (EV) makers to announce their deliveries for the previous month on the first day of each month, and Li Auto (NASDAQ: LI) couldn't wait to share a number today to showcase its strong performance.

Li Auto delivered more than 32,000 vehicles in June, taking premium Chinese brands to a whole new level of sales, its founder, chairman and CEO Li Xiang said in a speech today celebrating the company's eighth anniversary.

The company aims to become the No. 1 seller in the Chinese market for passenger cars priced at more than RMB 200,000 yuan ($27,590) and to reach 1.6 million annual deliveries by 2025, he said, repeating previous remarks.

The latest figure means that Li Auto's deliveries in June reached another record high and were the first time to exceed the 30,000-unit mark, up more than 145 percent from 13,024 units a year earlier.

The company delivered 28,277 vehicles in May, up 145.97 percent year-on-year and up 10.11 percent from April, the third consecutive month to exceed the 20,000-unit mark.

Earlier this week, local media reported that Li Auto had recently raised its full-year sales target to 400,000 units from the original 300,000. However, this was subsequently denied by Li.

Li Auto finished the first half of the year with more than 130,000 units sold and does not have any ability to make it to 400,000 units for the full year, he said on June 27.

The company's capabilities, including product, sales, capacity and organization, cannot support 400,000 units sold this year, and the gap is huge, Li said.

On June 18, Li said on Weibo that most members of Li Auto's management team thought the company should set an annual sales target of 360,000 units at the beginning of the year, but he ultimately decided to set a budget target based on annual sales of 306,000 units.

"This was partly because I didn't think we could be too optimistic about the economic environment this year, and partly because we didn't meet our budget targets for all three years from 2020-2022," he said at the time.

Li said the too-low targets he set led the company to place orders at suppliers at the beginning of the year that were clearly not keeping up with current sales, so several key components would take more than a quarter to reach the right capacity if production ramp-up began now.

Passenger vehicle sales in China are expected to decline this month compared to a year ago, but the performance of new energy vehicles (NEVs) remains strong.

In June, retail sales of NEVs in China are expected to be around 670,000 units, up 26 percent year-on-year and up 15.5 percent from May, according to estimates released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

Survey shows that automakers that contribute about 80 percent of passenger car sales are targeting retail sales growth of about 5 percent in June compared with May, the CPCA said.

According to preliminary projections, passenger vehicle sales in China were about 1.83 million units in June, up 5 percent from May but down 5.9 percent from a year earlier, the CPCA said.

The year-on-year decline was due to a high base in June last year, when China's auto market was recovering from the shock of Covid, according to the CPCA.

The CPCA had forecast several times this month that June passenger car sales would be lower than a year ago, one reason being China's halving of purchase taxes on mainstream internal combustion engine vehicles that began last June.

Today's latest estimate implies that NEVs had a penetration rate of about 36.6 percent at retail in June, up from 33.3 percent in May.

Auto market demand dropped slightly in early June, but the market warmed up with the start of the June 18 shopping spree, the release of local government subsidies and the Dragon Boat Festival, the CPCA said.

The overall discount rate in China's passenger car market was about 17.8 percent in mid-June, expanding 0.6 percent from the end of May, according to the CPCA.

Major carmakers averaged 31,100 daily retail sales in the first week of June, down 42 percent from the same period in May, mainly due to a high base of vehicle sales during last month's Labor Day holiday, the CPCA said.

Their average daily retail sales in the second week of June were 42,900 units, down 14 percent from the second week of May.

As promotions kicked off in mid-June, the car market picked up in the third week, with average daily retail sales of 57,500 units, up 21 percent from the same week in May.

In the fourth week, with the arrival of the Dragon Boat Festival holiday, average daily retail sales are expected to be 62,000 units, an increase of 26 percent over the same period in May.

In week five, average daily retail is expected to be 113,700 units, up 32 percent from the same period in May, due to the pulse of the quarter-end sales, according to the CPCA.

Tesla delivers 42,508 vehicles in China in May, taking 7.3% share of NEV market

Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) retail sales in China in May were 42,508 units, ranking third in the country's new energy vehicle (NEV) market with a 7.3 percent share, according to data released by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) on June 9.

That's up 332.65 percent from 9,825 units in the same month last year and up 6.39 percent from 39,956 units in April, according to data monitored by CnEVPost.

BYD's retail sales in May were 220,735 units, up 94.0 percent year-on-year, placing it first in the NEV market with a 38.1 percent share, according to the CPCA's ranking.

Tesla has a factory in Shanghai, its largest in the world, producing the Model 3 and Model Y, with an annual capacity of more than 1.1 million units.

Model 3 and Model Y breakdown sales figures in China are not yet available. Tesla's pattern is to produce vehicles in the first half of each quarter primarily for export and in the second half for the local market.

China's new energy passenger vehicle retail sales in May were 580,000 units, including 388,000 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and 192,000 plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), data released by the CPCA on June 8 showed.

This means that Tesla's share of the BEV market in China was 10.96 percent in May, slightly higher than April's 10.8 percent. It had a slightly lower share of the NEV market in May than the 7.58 percent it had in April.

Tesla's Shanghai plant exported 35,187 vehicles in May, considering the CPCA said on June 5 that Tesla sold 77,695 China-made vehicles in May.

That export figure was up 57.51 percent year-on-year but down 1.95 percent from April, CnEVPost's calculations show.

In the ranking released yesterday by the CPCA, GAC Aion came in second with a 7.8 percent share of May retail sales at 45,003 units, up 113.7 percent year-on-year.

SAIC-GM-Wuling ranked fourth with a 6.3 percent share of May retail sales, up 13.7 percent to 36,253 units.

China EV battery installations in May: BYD extends lead in LFP market

After regaining the top spot in the lithium iron phosphate (LFP) market over CATL in April, BYD extended its lead in this segment in May.

In May, China's power battery installations were 28.2 GWh, up 52.1 percent year-on-year and up 12.3 percent from 25.1 GWh in April, according to data released today by the China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance (CABIA).

CATL's power battery installed base in May was 11.67 GWh, ranking first with a 41.31 percent share, up from 40.83 percent in April.

BYD's power battery installed base in May was 8.68 GWh, ranking second with a 30.72 percent share, up 1.61 percentage points from 29.11 percent in April.

CALB ranked third with a 7.76 percent share of 2.19 GWh in May, down 0.98 percentage points from 8.74 percent in April.

Eve Energy ranked No. 4 in May with 1.33 GWh installed base and 4.71 percent share, down 0.77 percentage points from 5.48 percent in April.

Gotion High-tech ranked 5th in May with 1.01 GWh of installed base and a 3.58 percent share.

Gotion ranked fourth in March with 4.51 percent share, but was overtaken by Eve Energy in April.

China's ternary battery installed base in May was 9.0 GWh, accounting for 32.0 percent of total installed base, up 8.7 percent year-on-year and up 12.8 percent from April.

The installed base of LFP batteries was 19.2 GWh, accounting for 67.8 percent of the total installed base, up 87.2 percent year-on-year and up 11.8 percent from April.

In the LFP battery market, BYD installed 8.68 GWh in May, topping the list with a 45.30 percent share, up from 42.68 percent in April.

CATL's installed base in the LFP battery market in May was 5.90 GWh, ranking second with a 30.81 percent share, down from 33.65 percent in April.

In March, CATL's share of the LFP market was 39.47, higher than BYD's 38.88 percent, marking the first time it has overtaken BYD in this segment during the year.

BYD's share of the LFP market rebounded to 42.68 percent in April, regaining the lead over CATL's 33.65 percent.

Eve Energy and CALB ranked third and fourth in the LFP battery market with 6.33 percent and 6.14 percent shares, respectively.

In the ternary battery market, CATL ranked first with 63.87 percent of the installed base in May with 5.77 GWh.

CALB and LG Energy Solution ranked second and third in the ternary battery market with 11.26 percent and 7.48 percent shares, respectively.

China's new energy vehicle (NEV) sales in May were 717,000 units, up 60.2 percent year-on-year and up 12.74 percent from April, according to data released today by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM).

The CAAM released data on wholesale sales by automakers, where NEVs include battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) and fuel cell vehicles.

China sold 522,000 BEVs in May, up 50.43 percent year-on-year and up 10.83 percent from April.

Production of NEVs in China was 713,000 units in May, up 53 percent year-on-year and 11.4 percent from 640,000 units in April.

Production of all vehicles in China was 2.333 million units in May, up 21.1 percent year-on-year and up 9.4 percent from May.

Both auto production and sales in China saw year-on-year growth in May, with NEVs continuing their rapid growth, the CAAM said.

However, the auto industry is still operating under great pressure, and the profitability of industry enterprises is at a low level, the CAAM noted.

From the current perspective, China's auto industry still needs to further recover and expand demand, and the release of consumption potential needs to be accelerated to drive steady growth in the industry, the CAAM said.

In May, 389,000 vehicles were exported from China, up 58.7 percent year-on-year and up 3.4 percent from April.

Among them, exports of NEVs were 108,000 units, up 150 percent year-on-year and up 7.9 percent from April.

In January-May, China's auto sales were 10.617 million units, an increase of 11.1 percent from the same period last year.

NEVs sold 2.94 million units in January-May, up 46.8 percent year-on-year, with a market share of 27.7 percent.

China NEV retail up 10.5% MoM to 580,000 in May, CPCA data show

NEV penetration at retail in China was 33.3 percent in May, up 6.7 percentage points from 26.6 percent a year earlier and up from 32.3 percent in April.

Retail sales of new energy passenger vehicles (passenger NEVs) in China were 580,000 units in May, up 60.9 percent year-on-year and up 10.5 percent from April, according to data released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

This is higher than the preliminary figure of 557,000 units announced by the CPCA on June 7, and in line with its estimate released on May 23.

Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for 388,000 in May, or 66.9 percent of all NEV retail sales. This was up 44.9 percent year-on-year and up 7.5 percent from April.

Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) accounted for 192,000 units in May, contributing 33.1 percent of NEV retail sales, an increase of 109.1 percent year-on-year and up 17.22 percent from April.

Retail sales of all passenger vehicles in China were 1.742 million units in May, up 28.6 percent year-on-year and up 7.3 percent from April.

NEV penetration at retail in China was 33.3 percent in May, up 6.7 percentage points from 26.6 percent in the same month last year and up from 32.3 percent in April.

The penetration rate of NEVs was 57.1 percent for local brands, 23.0 percent for luxury brands and 4.0 percent for mainstream joint venture brands.

From January to May, retail sales of passenger NEVs in China were 2.42 million units, up 41 percent year-on-year.

Wholesale sales of passenger NEVs in China were 673,000 units in May, up 59.4 percent year-on-year and up 11.5 percent from April.

This means that the penetration of NEVs at wholesale in May was 33.7 percent, up 7.2 percentage points from 26.5 percent a year ago and down from 33.9 percent in April.

The penetration of Chinese domestic brands' NEVs at wholesale in May was 50.4 percent, compared to 33.6 percent for luxury brands and 4.3 percent for mainstream joint venture brands.

From January to May, wholesale sales of passenger NEVs in China were 2.78 million units, up 48 percent year-on-year.

In May, China exported 92,000 passenger NEVs, of which BEVs accounted for 92.6 percent. This represents a year-on-year increase of 135.7 percent, up 1.2 percent from April, and contributed 30.5 percent of all passenger vehicle exports.

Looking ahead, the CPCA believes it would be normal if Chinese passenger car sales in June were lower than a year ago, as China halved the purchase tax on major fuel vehicles starting June 1 last year, allowing for a big increase in sales that month.

Retail sales of new energy passenger vehicles in China increased 55 percent in May to 557,000 units, up 6 percent from April, according to preliminary figures released today by the CPCA.

On May 23, the CPCA estimated in a report that China's estimated retail sales of new energy passenger vehicles in May would be around 580,000 units.

From January to May, retail sales of new energy passenger vehicles in China were 2.4 million units, up 40 percent year-on-year, the CPCA said today.

Wholesale sales of new energy passenger vehicles in China rose 59 percent to 671,000 units in May, up 11 percent from the previous month.

From January to May, wholesale sales of new energy passenger vehicles in China were 2.779 million units, up 47 percent year-on-year.

Retail sales of all passenger vehicles in China were 1.759 million units in May, up 30 percent year-on-year and up 8 percent from April, according to the CPCA.

This means that the penetration of new energy passenger vehicles at retail in May was 31.66 percent, down from 32.3 percent in April.

Retail sales of all passenger vehicles in China from January to May were 7.654 million units, up 4 percent year-on-year.

Wholesale sales of passenger vehicles in China were 2.015 million units in May, up 27 percent year-on-year and up 13 percent from April.

From January to May, wholesale sales of passenger cars in China were 8.857 million units, an increase of 11 percent year-on-year.

With the price war gradually receding, dealers are stabilizing their mindset and consumers are returning to rational consumption, easing the wait-and-see mood, the CPCA said.

The following is the CPCA's weekly retail sales data of the Chinese passenger vehicle market in May announced today:

In the first week of May, from May 1-7, the average daily retail sales of passenger cars were 54,000 units, up 67 percent year-on-year and up 46 percent over the same period in April.

In the second week of May, from May 8-14, the average daily retail sales of passenger cars were 48,000 units, up 44 percent year-on-year and up 6 percent from the same period in April.

In the third week of May, from May 15-21, the average daily retail sales of passenger cars were 48,000 units, up 15 percent year-on-year but down 12 percent from the same period in April.

In the fourth week of May, from May 22-28, the average daily retail sales of passenger cars were 50,000 units, down 17 percent year-on-year and 33 percent lower than the same period in April.

In the fifth week of May, May 29-31, the average daily retail sales of passenger cars were 122,000 units, up 94 percent year-on-year and up 57 percent from the same period in April.

Great Wall Motor sells record 23,755 NEVs in May, up 60% from Apr

Great Wall Motor's new energy vehicle (NEV) sales saw significant growth last month as the auto giant ramps up its efforts to make the transition to electrification.

Great Wall Motor sold a record 23,755 NEVs in May, up 104.13 percent from a year earlier and up 59.83 percent from 14,863 units in April, data released yesterday showed.

Including conventional fuel vehicles, Great Wall Motor's total sales in May were 101,020 units, up 26.18 percent year-on-year and up 8.49 percent from 93,107 units in April.

This means that NEVs contributed 23.5 percent of Great Wall Motor's sales in May.

From January to May, Great Wall Motor's NEV sales were 66,426 units, up 30.48 percent year-on-year, contributing 16 percent of all vehicle sales of 414,095 units.

Although Great Wall Motor saw significant growth in NEV sales, it still lags far behind (OTCMKTS: BYDDY) in the segment.

BYD sold 240,220 NEVs in May, up 108.99 percent year-on-year and up 14.23 percent from April.

BYD ceased production and sales of vehicles powered entirely by internal combustion engines in March 2022, shifting its focus to plug-in hybrids and pure electric vehicles.

On May 25, Great Wall Motor accused two BYD hybrid models of failing to meet pollutant emissions standards.

Great Wall Motor's battery electric vehicle-focused brand, , sold 10,616 units in May, up 19.27 percent from 8,901 units in April.

Its premium Wey brand sold 5,770 units in May, up 128.97 percent year-on-year and up 142.95 percent from April.

The Wey brand launched the six-seat Lanshan DHT-PHEV on April 13 with a starting price of RMB 273,800 to compete with Li Auto's Li L8. Deliveries of the model began on April 25.

The Lanshan DHT-PHEV sold 5,136 units in its first full sales month, and its production capacity is currently climbing with more orders to be delivered, Great Wall Motor said yesterday.

On May 25, Great Wall Motor's Haval brand launched the Haval Xiaolong and Haval Xiaolong Max, two hybrid SUVs with a starting price of RMB 139,800.

The Haval Xiaolong and Haval Xiaolong Max sold 3,088 units in May, Great Wall Motor said.

On June 1, the Wey brand launched the Mocca DHT-PHEV, a 5-seat SUV with a starting price of RMB 231,800,000.

Great Wall Motor sold a record 25,131 units overseas in May, up 15.21 percent from April and 104.04 percent year-on-year.

Its cumulative overseas sales from January to May were 98,920 units, up 100.36 percent year-on-year.

Global EV battery market share in Jan-April: CATL 35.9%, BYD 16.1%

In January-April, CALB's power battery installations of 8.4 GWh surpassed Samsung SDI's 7.5 GWh, according to SNE Research.

China's and (OTCMKTS: BYDDY) continued to be the world's two largest power battery manufacturers in January-April, the latest data show.

In January-April, global battery consumption for electric vehicles (EVs) totaled 182.5 GWh, up 49 percent from 122.5 GWh in the same period last year, according to data released today by South Korean market research firm SNE Research.

Among them, CATL installed 65.6 GWh of batteries from January to April, up 55.6 percent from 42.1 GWh in the same period last year.

The Chinese power battery giant continues to rank No. 1 in the world with a 35.9 percent share and remains the only one in the world with a market share of more than 30.0 percent.

This was higher than its 34.4 percent share in the same period last year and up from its 35.0 percent share in the January-March period.

CATL's batteries are installed in many major passenger EV models in China's domestic market, such as the Model 3, Model Y, SAIC Mulan, Y and ET5, as well as Chinese commercial vehicle models, and continue to grow steadily, SNE Research said.

BYD installed 29.4 GWh of power batteries from January to April, up 108.3 percent from 14.1 GWh in the same period last year.

The company ranked second with a 16.1 percent share from January to April, up from 11.5 percent in the same period last year but down from 16.2 percent in January-March.

BYD has gained popularity in China's domestic market with its competitive pricing by establishing a vertically integrated supply chain management, including battery self-sufficiency and vehicle manufacturing, SNE Research said.

With the launch of the Atto3 model, BYD showed explosive growth by expanding its market share outside of China in Asia and Europe, SNE Research said.

LG Energy Solution installed 25.7 GWh of power batteries from January to April, up 49.3 percent year-on-year.

The South Korean company ranked third in the world with a 14.1 percent share, unchanged from a year ago.

Japan's Panasonic was fourth with 8.2 percent share, South Korea's SK On was fifth with 5.2 percent share and China's CALB was sixth with 4.6 percent share.

South Korea's Samsung SDI of, China's Gotion High-tech of China, Eve Energy and Sunwoda ranked seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth respectively, with shares of 4.1 percent, 2.4 percent, 1.8 percent and 1.5 percent from January to April, respectively.

It is worth noting that CALB's power battery installed base of 8.4 GWh exceeded Samsung SDI's 7.5 GWh in the January to April period.

In January-March, CALB was 5.7 GWh, lower than Samsung SDI's 6.5 GWh.

In 2023, Chinese companies are expected to enter overseas markets such as the US and Europe in preparation for a gradual decline in growth rates in China's domestic market, the largest EV market, according to SNE Research.

The European EV market, which has relatively fewer political issues than the US, is attracting attention as a strategic point for seeking to diversify the battery supply chain, the report noted.

Going forward, the share of LFP batteries in Europe is expected to increase as Chinese companies enter the European market in earnest, the report said.
