Great Wall Motor steps up electrification transition as Tank brand launches 1st NEV model

The Tank brand has launched its first NEV model, the Tank 500 Hi4-T. The brand has sold more than 10,000 fuel-powered vehicles in most months of the past year.

Great Wall Motor is continuing its electrification transition, though it has fallen significantly behind major rivals, including (OTCMKTS: BYDDY).

The automaker's personalized brand Tank officially launched the Tank 500 Hi4-T, the brand's first new energy vehicle (NEV) model, at an event yesterday, with only one version available and a starting price of RMB 335,000 ($46,290).

The Tank 500 Hi4-T is the plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) version of the fuel-powered Tank 500 which is offered in nine versions with a starting price range of RMB 335,000 to RMB 395,000.

The Tank 500 Hi4-T's starting price of RMB 335,000 means that Tank is essentially phasing out the lower-trim versions of the Tank 500 with this PHEV model in order to gain a larger presence in the NEV market.

Tank's current models are all off-road SUVs, including the Tank 500 and the less expensive Tank 300.

The Tank 500 Hi4-T measures 5,078 mm in length, 1,934 mm in width and 1,905 mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,850 mm, which are essentially the same dimensions as the fuel-powered Tank 500, except for a slightly longer length than the latter's 5,070 mm.

The Tank 500 Hi4-T is powered by a 2.0T engine with a maximum power of 180 kW and a peak torque of 380 Nm, and an electric motor with a maximum power of 120 kW and a maximum torque of 400 Nm.

The Tank 500 Hi4-T has a combined power of 300 kW and 750 Nm of peak torque, and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds.

The model is equipped with a ternary lithium-ion battery pack with a capacity of 37.1 kWh and has a pure electric range of 120 km in NEDC and 110 km in WLTC.

It supports fast charging, taking 24 minutes to charge from 30 percent to 80 percent and 42 minutes to recharge from 30 percent to 100 percent.

The Tank 500 Hi4-T has a fuel tank of 70 L and consumes 9.55 L per 100 km at the lowest charge under WLTC standards.

Powered by this powertrain, the Tank 500 Hi4-T has a combined WLTC fuel consumption of 2.2 L per 100 km.

Like the current mainstream NEV models, the Tank 500 Hi4-T is equipped with L2 driving assistance system with functions including smart parking, adaptive cruise control, lane assist, collision warning and automatic braking.

The Tank 500 Hi4-T show cars and vehicles used for test drives are already available at Great Wall Motor's stores.

Great Wall Motor is one of the most successful local car companies in China, but is clearly lagging behind in the NEV market.

In the past few months, Great Wall Motor has increased its efforts in the NEV market with the launch of several products including the Lanshan DHT-PHEV and the Haval Xiaolong.

Great Wall Motor sold a record 23,755 units of NEVs in May, up 104.13 percent year-on-year and up 59.83 percent from 14,863 units in April, according to data released earlier this month.

Including conventional fuel vehicles, Great Wall Motor's total sales in May were 101,020 units, up 26.18 percent year-on-year and up 8.49 percent from 93,107 units in April.

This means that NEVs contributed 23.5 percent of Great Wall Motor's sales in May.

As a comparison, its main competitor BYD stopped production and sales of vehicles powered entirely by internal combustion engines in March 2022 and switched to focus on producing plug-in hybrids and pure electric vehicles.

BYD sold 240,220 NEVs in May, up 108.99 percent year-on-year and up 14.23 percent from April.

The success of the Tank line of off-road SUVs over the past few years and the lesser competition they face may be one of the reasons for the brand's slow transition to electrification.

The Tank brand has sold more than 10,000 units per month over the past year, except for January and February of this year, when it sold 5,915 and 6,344 units, respectively.

Great Wall Motor's new energy vehicle (NEV) sales saw significant growth last month as the auto giant ramps up its efforts to make the transition to electrification.

Great Wall Motor sold a record 23,755 NEVs in May, up 104.13 percent from a year earlier and up 59.83 percent from 14,863 units in April, data released yesterday showed.

Including conventional fuel vehicles, Great Wall Motor's total sales in May were 101,020 units, up 26.18 percent year-on-year and up 8.49 percent from 93,107 units in April.

This means that NEVs contributed 23.5 percent of Great Wall Motor's sales in May.

From January to May, Great Wall Motor's NEV sales were 66,426 units, up 30.48 percent year-on-year, contributing 16 percent of all vehicle sales of 414,095 units.

Although Great Wall Motor saw significant growth in NEV sales, it still lags far behind (OTCMKTS: BYDDY) in the segment.

BYD sold 240,220 NEVs in May, up 108.99 percent year-on-year and up 14.23 percent from April.

BYD ceased production and sales of vehicles powered entirely by internal combustion engines in March 2022, shifting its focus to plug-in hybrids and pure electric vehicles.

On May 25, Great Wall Motor accused two BYD hybrid models of failing to meet pollutant emissions standards.

Great Wall Motor's battery electric vehicle-focused brand, , sold 10,616 units in May, up 19.27 percent from 8,901 units in April.

Its premium Wey brand sold 5,770 units in May, up 128.97 percent year-on-year and up 142.95 percent from April.

The Wey brand launched the six-seat Lanshan DHT-PHEV on April 13 with a starting price of RMB 273,800 to compete with Li Auto's Li L8. Deliveries of the model began on April 25.

The Lanshan DHT-PHEV sold 5,136 units in its first full sales month, and its production capacity is currently climbing with more orders to be delivered, Great Wall Motor said yesterday.

On May 25, Great Wall Motor's Haval brand launched the Haval Xiaolong and Haval Xiaolong Max, two hybrid SUVs with a starting price of RMB 139,800.

The Haval Xiaolong and Haval Xiaolong Max sold 3,088 units in May, Great Wall Motor said.

On June 1, the Wey brand launched the Mocca DHT-PHEV, a 5-seat SUV with a starting price of RMB 231,800,000.

Great Wall Motor sold a record 25,131 units overseas in May, up 15.21 percent from April and 104.04 percent year-on-year.

Its cumulative overseas sales from January to May were 98,920 units, up 100.36 percent year-on-year.

Great Wall Motor accuses 2 BYD hybrids of failing to meet pollutant emissions standards as competition intensifies

Chinese fuel-car giant Great Wall Motor is making its conflict with local new energy vehicle (NEV) giant BYD (OTCMKTS: BYDDY) public, as the competition between the two grows fiercer.

Great Wall Motor has filed a report with Chinese regulators against BYD, alleging that the latter's Qin Plus DM-i and Song Plus DM-i use normal-pressure fuel tanks and are suspected of having substandard evaporative pollutant emissions, according to a statement today.

Great Wall Motor filed the report with China's Ministry of Ecology and Environment, the State Administration of Market Supervision and Administration, and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology on April 11, according to the statement.

Under Chinese law, environmental regulators are supposed to conduct a preliminary review of suspected violations and decide whether to open a case, according to the statement.

Great Wall Motor is now closely monitoring regulators' progress in handling the report, the statement said.

Great Wall Motor was once the top-selling SUV company in China, with its Haval H6 being the best-selling SUV for many years.

But in the past few years, BYD has risen to the top at a time of rapid growth in China's NEV industry, with its Song family of models often becoming the new No. 1 SUV seller.

From January to April, the BYD Song family sold 174,422 units, up 76.5 percent from 98,809 units in the same period last year, making it the best-selling SUV in China during that period, according to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

The Haval H6 sold 63,682 units from January to April, down 25.9 percent from 85,986 units in the same period last year, placing it fifth in the best-selling SUV retail sales rankings.

Great Wall Motor is trying to recapture lost share in the SUV market with new model launches, making the Xiaolong line of plug-in hybrid SUVs available on May 16, offering the Haval Xiaolong as well as the Haval Xiaolong Max models.

The Haval Xiaolong is a compact SUV aimed at the Song Pro DM-i series, while the Haval Xiaolong Max is a mid-size SUV aimed at the Song Plus DM-i series.

Later today, BYD will officially launch the 2023 Song Pro DM-i in China, which is expected to bring the price down from the previously available version.
