BYD rolls out 1st energy storage system using blade batteries

has been using blade batteries in its full line of passenger cars and released a bus chassis platform using blade batteries in September last year.

BYD is starting to use its signature blade battery in its energy storage systems, marking another major use of the battery technology in the company's business after passenger cars and electric buses.

BYD launched its first energy storage system based on blade batteries, the BYD MC Cube, at a solar-related trade show today, according to a live video replay.

The energy storage system is equipped with blade battery cells that have passed pinprick tests and adopts a technology called CTS (cell to system).

These blade batteries use a module-less, pack-less design and are integrated directly into the system, reducing the number of components by about 36 percent, the company said.

This approach improves space utilization by about 98 percent, allowing for a structural strength improvement of about 30 percent.

In March 2020, BYD officially unveiled its blade battery based on lithium iron phosphate chemistry, and in July 2020 it launched its flagship sedan Han, the first to carry the battery.

To date, the new energy vehicle giant's entire lineup of passenger cars uses the battery.

On September 19, 2022, BYD brought the battery technology to electric buses by debuting what it called the eBus Blade Platform, a bus chassis technology platform that uses the blade battery, at the IAA Transportation event in Hannover, Germany.

It is worth noting that BYD's previously announced 2022 annual report provides more details about this energy storage system.

BYD MC Cube is a new generation energy storage system with ultra-high capacity density, ultra-safety, ultra-long life and ultra-low cost built by BYD to gain the No. 1 share of the global energy storage market, according to the report.

BYD had already been developing four models of that energy storage system in February 2022, and they would all begin mass production in March 2023, the report said.

When assembled into 20-foot containers, the energy storage system can have a capacity of 5.36 MWh per unit.

BYD's MC Cube highlights the technical capabilities of BYD's energy storage system innovation, which is expected to accelerate the world's energy revolution process, the annual report said.

BYD's installed power and energy storage battery capacity in April was about 9.954 GWh, up 59.47 percent from 6.242 GWh in the same month last year and up 0.64 percent from 8.952 GWh in March, according to data it announced on May 2.

Tesla has registered a new company in Shanghai that will perhaps be the operating entity for its energy storage business in China.

The company, called Tesla (Shanghai) New Energy Co Ltd, was established on April 13 with a registered capital of $2 million, according to data provider Tianyancha.

The company's registered address is at Lingang area in Shanghai's Pudong New Area, and its legal representative is Wang Hao, with Tom Zhu, who was named senior vice president of Tesla's automotive business earlier this month, as chairman.

Wang joined Tesla at the beginning of its entry into China in April 2014 as head of the destination charging program in China. He became vice president of Tesla China in January 2018 and began his role as general manager of Tesla China in August 2019.

Tesla's business scope for this new-energy company includes energy storage technology services, solar power technology services, automotive parts research and development, and import and export of goods.

The information hints that the company may be the operating entity for Tesla's energy storage business in China.

On April 9, Tesla signed a contract with Shanghai's Lingang authorities to build a new Megafactory in the area, which will be dedicated to the production of Tesla's energy storage product Megapack.

The Megafactory will be Tesla's first energy storage system factory outside of the US home market, with an initial planned annual production capacity of up to 10,000 commercial energy storage batteries and an energy storage scale of nearly 40 GWh, with products to be supplied to the global market.

The plant is scheduled to start construction in the third quarter of this year and go into operation in the second quarter of 2024.

Tesla's factory in China is located in Lingang area, which began operations at the end of 2019 and has now become Tesla's largest EV production base in the world.

Gotion reaches deal with Edison Power to tap Japan’s energy storage market

Gotion and Edison Power have a planned sales target of 1 GWh in the first year of the partnership, rising to 2 GWh per year from the second year onwards.

Chinese battery giant Gotion High-tech and Japan's Edison Power Co Ltd have reached a strategic cooperation agreement to jointly tap the energy storage market in Japan.

The two signed the agreement on March 15 to jointly develop the Japanese energy storage and battery recycling market and promote Gotion's products in the Japanese market, according to a press release from the Chinese battery maker today.

Gotion and Edison Power have a planned sales target of 1 GWh in the first year of the partnership, rising to 2 GWh per year from the second year onward.

Gotion will provide battery cells, modules and BMS, while Edison Power will be responsible for Japanese energy storage customer management, EPC services, and energy storage system operation and maintenance.

In addition, Gotion will also work with Edison Power to establish a recycling system for recycled energy storage batteries in Japan, according to the release.

With the development of global renewable energy and the revision of Japan's Electricity Business Act in May 2022, new opportunities will arise for the development of Japan's large-scale energy storage battery industry, according to the release.

Edison Power, which began developing and manufacturing energy storage battery systems in 1991, is also developing a solar power business and a biomass power business.

Gotion, one of China's power battery giants, ranked eighth in the world with a 2.1 percent share in January, according to a report released earlier this month by South Korean market research firm SNE Research.

In China, Gotion installed 0.78 GWh of power batteries in February, ranking fourth with a 3.58 percent share, according to data previously released by the China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance (CABIA).

The energy storage battery business is Gotion's second-largest business after power batteries.

In the first half of 2022, Gotion's revenue was RMB 8.6 billion, of which the power battery business contributed RMB 6.6 billion, or 76.51 percent, according to the company's semi-annual report.

Gotion's energy storage battery business generated RMB 1.28 billion in revenue in the first half of last year, contributing 14.8 percent.
