Many Chinese companies have announced breakthroughs in battery technology this year, with GAC Group-backed Greater Bay Technology as the latest.

Greater Bay unveiled the Phoenix battery, which claims to be able to charge from zero to nearly full in less than 10 minutes, at a battery technology launch event on June 6.

The Phoenix battery integrates Greater Bay's latest innovations in materials, electrochemistry, structure, and controls to give electric vehicles the ability to run as usual in all-weather conditions, it said.

Phoenix battery-equipped electric vehicles can be charged at up to 8C at different voltage platforms from 300 volts to 1000 volts, with 0-80 percent charging in 6 minutes, it said.

In the battery world, C refers to the charging multiplier, and 8C means the battery can theoretically be fully charged in one-eighth of an hour -- 7.5 minutes.

At the same time, Phoenix batteries offer leading-edge advantages in safety, cycle life, range and cost to compete with fuel-powered vehicles, Greater Bay said, according to a WeChat article it posted today.

Greater Bay said its technology gives the battery 18 times more heat exchange area compared to conventional solutions, and allows the pack temperature to rise from -20°C to +25°C in five minutes even in winter.

Phoenix battery uses a new structural design, not only the thermal management of the battery sees great improvements, volume utilization can be as high as 75 percent, it claimed.

With extremely fast charging, the Phoenix battery also has an ultra-long life, with a cycle life of 10 years or 800,000 kilometers, the company said.

The battery system's highly integrated design allows for an energy density of 260 Wh/kg and a range of 1,000 kilometers on a single charge, it said.

Phoenix batteries will be in mass production next year and are expected to be used in production vehicles by the end of next year, according to the company.

Greater Bay, founded in September 2020, is a battery maker incubated by GAC, according to its website.

The company is building cell and pack production capacity, with a pack plant in Nansha, Guangzhou, already in operation.

Greater Bay plans to build a production base of about 500 mu (33 hectares) in Guangzhou, with the first phase of construction expected to be completed in 2023 and a capacity of 8 GWh, which could supply batteries for 120,000 vehicles, the information on its website reads.

Gotion unveils new battery based on LMFP chemistry with range up to 1,000 km

The pack is based on Gotion's new L600 LMFP cells with an energy density of 240 Wh/kg and will be in mass production in 2024.

Several Chinese power battery makers have previously announced batteries with ranges of up to 1,000 km, but all are based on nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) ternary materials.

Now Gotion High-tech has unveiled a new battery technology, which claims to be able to achieve a range of 1,000 km even without the use of expensive ternary materials.

Hefei, Anhui-based Gotion unveiled its L600 LMFP battery cells based on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry and a battery pack called Astroinno Battery at its 12th technology conference today.

The L600 LMFP cells have an energy density of 240 Wh/kg, or 525 Wh/L. The cells support 4,000 cycles at room temperature and 1,800 cycles at high temperature, according to the company.

A battery system based on the L600 LMFP cell could have an energy density of 190 Wh/kg, which is higher than the energy density of packs based on ternary chemistry systems that are in mass production now, Gotion said, adding that the new cell will be in mass production in 2024.

The energy density growth of mass-produced LFP cells has faced a bottleneck, and further improvements require chemical system improvements, so the LFP solution with manganese addition was born, said Cheng Qian, Gotion's executive president of international operations.

Gotion unveiled the Astroinno Battery based on L600 LMFP cells, saying that the pack uses a sandwich structure with double-sided liquid cooling technology and minimalist design, resulting in a 45 percent reduction in the number of structural components and a 32 percent reduction in the weight of structural components.

The minimalist electrical design thinking makes the pack's wiring harness length only 26 percent of the previous one, from the original 303-meter harness down to 80 meters, with a volumetric grouping efficiency of 76 percent, according to the company.

The pack has an energy density of 190 Wh/kg, surpassing the energy density of ternary batteries currently on the market, Gotion said.

Gotion is not the first manufacturer to release a 1,000-km range battery pack, but it is the first to achieve that range based on the LFP chemistry system.

, China's largest power battery maker, unveiled Qilin Battery, or CTP (cell to pack) 3.0, on June 23, 2022, claiming an energy density of up to 255 Wh/kg to support a vehicle with a 1,000km range.

The Qilin Battery is an innovation in battery structure, not a chemical system, and a 1,000 km range battery pack requires NCM chemistry.

The first Qilin Battery with a 1,000 km range is the 001 of Zeekr, a premium electric vehicle brand of , and deliveries of the model with this range have already started on May 16.

On April 21, Svolt Energy, which was spun off from Great Wall Motor, made the real-life debut of its Dragon Armor Battery at the Shanghai auto show.

Dragon Armor is also an innovation in battery pack structure without involving battery chemistry.

Svolt Energy said that the Dragon Armor Battery with LFP cells could have a range of more than 800 kilometers, while such batteries with ternary cells could have a range of more than 1,000 kilometers.

Gotion installed 1.18 GWh of power batteries in China in April, ranking fifth with a 4.68 percent share, according to the China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance (CABIA).

In the LFP market, Gotion ranked fourth with a 6.17 percent share in April.

Svolt Energy’s Dragon Armor Battery makes real-life debut at Shanghai auto show

Svolt Energy, which was spun off from Great Wall Motor, gave its Dragon Armor Battery its real-life debut at the ongoing Shanghai auto show, after unveiling the battery late last year.

The battery maker showcased the Dragon Armor Battery at the Shanghai auto show -- which began April 18 and runs through April 27 -- with a video of a previous thermal runaway test on display.

In the test, heating triggered a thermal runaway of a cell in the middle of the pack, but no open fire was seen throughout the pack, Svolt Energy said in an April 19 post on its WeChat account.

The single cell runaway did not spread to adjacent cells, achieving the ultimate power battery safety, the article said.

Compared to the 46-series high nickel large cylindrical battery, the Dragon Armor Battery has 5 percent higher capacity on a 2C fast-charging solution, according to Svolt Energy.

On the 4C fast-charging solution, the Dragon Armor Battery has a 32 percent higher pack capacity compared to 46-series high nickel cylindrical batteries, the company said.

In addition, the highly integrated design of the Dragon Armor Battery reduces size and weight, effectively lowering battery costs, according to Svolt Energy.

The battery is compatible with a wide range of chemistries and can be carried in the A00-D class models, it said.

The strong compatibility shortens the development cycle of new models for car companies, and the versatility of the battery pack further reduces procurement costs, according to the company.

Since the announcement, Dragon Armor batteries have received multiple intent orders from customers, Svolt Energy said, without disclosing customer names.

Svolt Energy unveiled the Dragon Armor Battery at its third Battery Day event on December 15 in Changzhou, Jiangsu province, where it is headquartered.

Like BYD's Blade Battery and 's Qilin Battery, Svolt Energy's Dragon Armor is an innovation in battery pack structure that does not involve battery chemistry.

The Dragon Armor Battery system with lithium iron phosphate cells has improved volumetric pack efficiency to 76 percent and can have a range of more than 800 kilometers, the company said at the time.

Dragon Armor batteries with high-manganese iron-nickel cells can achieve a range of more than 900 kilometers, while such batteries with ternary cells can exceed 1,000 kilometers, Svolt Energy said.

The battery is expected to be on production models in 2023, including an SUV and a coupe in production in October 2023, Svolt Energy Chairman and CEO Yang Hongxin said at the Battery Day event.

Svolt Energy installed 0.43 GWh of batteries in China in March, ranking No. 9 with a 1.53 percent share, according to data released this month by the China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance (CABIA).

BYD's progress in mass production of sodium-ion batteries does not seem to differ much from CATL's, although it has not announced the latest progress.

CATL and BYD's sodium-ion batteries will both be carried in mass-produced vehicles within the year, and they will both be a mix of sodium-ion and lithium-ion batteries, according to a report by local media 36kr today.

CATL's sodium-ion battery will be installed in the first model of Chery's new energy vehicle (NEV) brand iCAR, which is expected to be launched in the fourth quarter of this year, according to the report.

The sodium-ion battery will also be used in Chery's small NEVs, such as the QQ Ice Cream and the Little Ant, the report said.

With the big rise in lithium prices last year, leading battery makers including BYD and CATL have accelerated the pace of sodium-ion battery development.

BYD's sodium-ion battery will also be in mass production in the second half of the year, and the first model to carry the battery will be the Seagull, the report said, citing a BYD source.

The battery will also be a hybrid sodium-ion and lithium-ion battery, according to the report.

Sodium-ion batteries cost less, but currently have low energy density.

The energy density of sodium-ion batteries is now about similar to that of lithium iron phosphate batteries around 2014, the latter of which can only support a range of about 150km in small micro vehicles, the 36kr report noted.

CATL unveiled its first-generation sodium-ion battery on July 29, 2021, saying that the energy density of the single cell had reached 160Wh/kg.

The company said at the time that the energy density of the first-generation sodium-ion battery was slightly lower than that of lithium iron phosphate batteries. However, it has obvious advantages in low-temperature performance and fast charging, especially in high-power application scenarios in alpine regions.

CATL's next-generation sodium-ion battery will have an energy density exceeding 200Wh/kg, it said at the 2021 launch event.

Sodium-ion batteries are expected to be carried in electric vehicles, said Huang Qisen, vice president of CATL research institute, at a forum related to sodium-ion batteries on November 29, 2022.

As for applications in passenger cars, sodium-ion batteries can generally meet the needs of models with a range of up to 400 kilometers, Huang said at the forum.

With its pioneering AB battery system integration technology, CATL has achieved a mix of sodium ion and lithium ion, allowing them to complement each other and thus increase the energy density of the battery system, Huang said at the time.

This approach is expected to enable sodium-ion batteries to support electric vehicle models with a range of up to 500 kilometers, he said, adding that models with that range account for 65 percent of the market share, meaning the use of sodium-ion batteries is promising.

CATL's sodium-ion batteries will first be used in Chery's models, it announced on April 16.

Last November, there were several rumors that BYD's sodium-ion battery would be mass-produced in 2023 and that the first model to be equipped with the battery would be the Seagull. But none of these rumors were confirmed.

Earlier today, LatePost reported that BYD had planned to put the sodium-ion battery in the new Seagull model in the second quarter of this year, but that plan has been delayed.

BYD responded by saying that the information was untrue, the LatePost story noted.

BYD launched the Seagull and started pre-sales of it on the first day of the Shanghai auto show on April 18, and the model is the latest addition to its Ocean series.

The car is available in three versions, with pre-sale prices of RMB 78,800 ($11,450), 83,800 and 95,800 respectively.

Notably, the model uses BYD's blade batteries based on lithium iron phosphate chemistry with pack capacities of 30.08 kWh and 38.88 kWh, respectively.

The car is offered in two range versions, with the lower-priced two models having a CLTC range of 305 km and the highest-priced version having a range of 405 km.

The Seagull received more than 10,000 orders in the 24 hours after pre-sale began, BYD said yesterday.

CALB unveils new battery tech, boasting significant performance gains over traditional cylindrical cells

As CATL's Qilin Battery begins mass production, CALB, another Chinese battery manufacturer, has also rolled out its battery innovation.

CALB officially unveiled its new battery with a "U" type structure at the recent China EV 100 Forum event, an innovation based on its One-Stop minimalist design concept, according to an article by the CATL rival yesterday.

The battery is based on structural and chemical innovations developed by CALB in-house, the industry's first "U" type structure, according to the article, which features a presentation by an executive.

This design allows the battery to reduce the resistance of structural components by 50 percent, achieve an energy density of 300 Wh/kg, and support fast charging of more than 6C, achieving a significant increase in performance compared to traditional cylindrical batteries, according to CALB.

As background, C refers to the battery's charge multiplier, and 6C means that the battery could theoretically be fully charged in one-sixth of an hour -- 10 minutes.

"We have made a disruptive innovation to the structure of the cylindrical battery by introducing the 'U' type structure," CALB vice president Xie Qiu said in a presentation at the China EV 100 Forum.

While the Tabless structure solves some of the current path problems, treating the cell's shell as a conductive component results in a relatively long path for the current to flow through, Xie said, adding that the shell is steel, which does not conduct well.

CALB's structural innovation reduces the current flow path by 70 percent relative to Tabless cells, reduces structural resistance by 50 percent, and improves space utilization by 3 percent, he said.

Also considering CALB's chemical material system technology, the company's large cylindrical battery can achieve 6C fast charging while the energy density of the cells can reach 300 Wh/kg, according to Xie.

In addition to the performance improvement of the cells, the "U" type structure also helps to improve manufacturing efficiency. Compared with the Tabless technology, the number of welding machines in the production line of this battery is about 70 percent less, he said.

CALB is the latest local manufacturer to announce progress in battery technology innovation.

On June 23, 2022, CATL unveiled its CTP (cell to pack) 3.0 Qilin Battery, which it says brings battery system integration to a new level.

The Qilin Battery allows volume utilization to exceed 72 percent and energy density to reach 255 Wh/kg, easily allowing vehicles to achieve a range of 1000 km, CATL said at the time.

With the same chemistry system and the same pack size, Qilin Battery delivers 13 percent more power compared to the 4680 battery, achieving an overall improvement in range, fast charging, safety, longevity, efficiency, and low-temperature performance, according to CATL.

On March 21, local media outlet The Paper reported that CATL's Qilin Battery has achieved mass production.

CATL is the world's largest battery manufacturer, with a 33.9 percent share in January-February, according to data released by South Korean market research firm SNE Research on March 30.

CALB ranked seventh in the global market with a 3.4 percent share.

Notably, CATL is suing CALB in China for infringing its patent rights.
