The southern Chinese city of Shenzhen will host an auto show starting this Friday, with Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) and new Chinese carmakers including NIO (NYSE: NIO) participating.

The 2023 Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area International Auto Show (Auto Shenzhen 2023) will be held at the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center starting June 16, where Tesla is one of the main exhibitors, according to information released today by the show's organizers.

This will be Tesla's first participation in an auto show in China since the Shanghai auto show in April 2021.

On April 19, 2021, on the first day of the last Shanghai auto show, a female owner got on the roof of a car at the Tesla booth and accused Tesla of brake failure. As of today, the dispute is still ongoing.

Since the drama, Tesla has not participated in any more auto shows in China, including the 2023 Shanghai auto show two months ago.

June 16 is the media day for the upcoming show, and general admission will be available from June 17 to June 24.

Tesla's booth is located in Hall 9 on the 1st floor, next to 's (NYSE: XPEV) booth. The booths of -backed AITO, Smart, Leapmotor, Rising Auto, and Voyah are also in the area.

NIO will also be at the show and will be showcasing the ET5 Touring, according to the event's organizers.

The day before that show starts, NIO will launch the ET5 Touring in China on June 15, with its launch event starting at 19:00 Beijing time. The company will also launch the ET5 Touring and the new ES6 in Europe a few hours later on the same day.

NIO's booth at the Shenzhen auto show is in Hall 3, near the booths of Bentley and Lotus. The company will hold a press conference at the show on June 16 from 10:00 to 10:30.

The last show, Auto Shenzhen 2022, started on May 28, 2022 and ran through June 5. It was the first auto show in China last year.

NIO's booth at Auto Shenzhen last year was also in Hall 3, a two-floor area where the first floor displayed the full range of models, a transparent second-generation battery swap station and NIO Power's products. The second floor includes a relaxation area, NIO Cafe, and Joy Camp.

In addition to Tesla, NIO and XPeng, new energy vehicle (NEV) makers including (OTCMKTS: BYDDY), (NASDAQ: LI) and will also participate in Auto Shenzhen 2023.

The date of the annual Chengdu auto show is set, after the Shanghai auto show has just ended and the Beijing auto show has announced its date.

The 26th edition of the Chengdu Motor Show will be held from August 25 to September 3, 2023, the event's organizers mentioned in a post on its official WeChat account Monday.

Separately, information on the Chengdu auto show's official website shows the event will be held at the city's Western China International Expo City, with a media day on August 25.

The Chengdu auto show has become one of China's four A-class auto shows and is the most visible wind vane in the western China auto market, the event's official website reads.

After China's Covid reopening late last year, major events, including auto shows, are highly anticipated because they are important to stimulate economic growth.

The just-concluded biennial Shanghai auto show, held April 18-27, attracted nearly 1 million visitors, with new energy vehicles (NEVs) in the spotlight.

The Shanghai auto show, which officially closed on April 27, hosted more than 13,000 global media workers and had 906,000 visitors, the show's organizers said in an April 27 article.

The total exhibition area of the Shanghai auto show exceeded 360,000 square meters, with 1,413 vehicles on display in the vehicle section, including 513 NEV show cars, according to the article.

On April 21, during the Shanghai auto show, the organizers of the Beijing auto show announced that the 17th Beijing International Automotive Exhibition (Auto China 2024) will be held from April 25 to May 4, 2024, which will mark the event's return after a four-year hiatus.

The Beijing auto show has been held in Beijing every two years since 1990. The 17th Beijing auto show was originally planned for April 21-April 30, 2022, but was cancelled due to Covid concerns.

Prior to that, the 16th Beijing auto show was postponed to September 26-October 5, 2020 due to Covid.

Last year's Chengdu auto show opened on August 26 amid Covid concerns, but the show, which was to run for 10 days, ended early on August 30 due to epidemic control after four days.

More than 1,600 vehicles from 128 brands were on display in Chengdu at the time. Before that show ended, 108 new models were unveiled, more than 40 of which were NEVs.

At last year's Chengdu auto show, NIO presented the full range of models and also brought a battery swap station with a transparent bottom.

Shanghai auto show: Takeaways from Deutsche Bank

Edison Yu's team shares their key takeaways on new model pricing, design, ADAS, and ultra-fast charging.

As one of the most important auto shows in several years, the ongoing Shanghai auto show is attracting a lot of interest. In a research note sent to investors today, Deutsche Bank analyst Edison Yu's team shares their thoughts on the event.

This year's Shanghai auto show began last week, with media days on April 18-19, professional visitor days on April 20-21, and general public access on April 22 - 27.

Yu's team shared their four key takeaways regarding new model pricing, local design, Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) capabilities, and ultra-fast charging.

"Pricing to be competitive at least through early 2024 With the price war raging on, we continue to expect OEMs to be aggressive as market share is the #1 priority," the team wrote.

Although no significant price cuts were announced at the show, automakers were very careful in disclosing prices.

did not reveal pricing details for the G6 other than the previous range of 200,000 to 300,000 yuan. Likewise, NIO did not detail the price of the new ES6, the team noted.

If demand stays low, there could be another wave of price cuts, so the automakers do not want to overprice their new models. In addition, lithium carbonate prices have fallen sharply, providing more cushion for pure electric vehicles, Yu's team said.

The team expects G6 pricing to trend toward the lower end of the range previously mentioned by XPeng, especially given that the X starts at just 190,000 yuan and the Model Y could see one more price cut this year.

To offset the drop in average selling price, automakers are taking steps to squeeze the structural costs of new platforms, such as XPeng's SEPA 2.0 platform, according to the team.

In terms of product design, the quality of local models is improving rapidly, and several local automakers began turning to foreign talent a few years ago to speed up the process, the team said.

BYD's design chief is Wolfang Egger, previously at Audi, and NIO's vice president of design is Kris Tomasson who came over from BMW, the team noted.

The team highlighted two models that really showcase this shift: the BYD Song L and the Hozon GT Speedster.

"There are many other examples of bold and sleek design at the show and we expect this to be the new norm as the market shifts from ICE to EV," the team wrote.

With design and cost advantages, a natural extension is to export. During the show, Zeekr provided more details about its European strategy, the team noted.

On the ADAS side, Yu's team said subscriptions have proven difficult to monetize.

"We would have thought selling an ADAS subscription service could be easy next step. However, consumers are reluctant to adopt this business model," the team wrote.

XPeng is trying to dramatically reduce the cost of its XNGP system while improving its performance.

is currently beta testing the City NOA software with a goal of rolling it out to 100 cities nationwide by the end of 2023. The company believes its AD Max 3.0 system will be able to operate without HD maps and guarantees that all upgrades will be free for life with no subscription fees, the team noted.

NIO's NOP+ beta program is expected to end at the end of June and then begin charging subscribers RMB 380 per month.

"NIO is offering 2 years for free to 2023 ET7 buyers who pay the order deposit before June and we would expect this subscription to be increasingly used a promotional bundle to boost sales," the team wrote.

In terms of ultra-fast charging facilities, Yu's team said that automakers are just beginning to build up such capabilities, and real-world charging requires synchronization of the car, charger and grid. If any part becomes a bottleneck, charging speeds will not reach maximum performance.

NIO's ultra-fast 500 kW charger is now in service and open to other brands.

XPeng is rapidly rolling out its new S4 480 kW DC ultra-fast charging station, with a target of 500 this year.

Li Auto is focused on 800V solutions and expects its upcoming battery electric vehicle (BEV)to have 400 km of range in 10 minutes, the team noted.

Li Auto announced on April 18 that its first all-electric model will be the world's first to feature 's 4C Qilin Battery.

By 2025, Li Auto's product array will include a super flagship model, five extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), and five BEVs, the company said.

Shanghai auto show: EVs take center stage, nearly 40 models equipped with LiDARs

There are 38 models equipped with LiDARs, of which BYD-backed RoboSense is the biggest winner, being the supplier of 18 of them.

At the Shanghai auto show two years ago, 's P5 sedan attracted a lot of attention as the world's first LiDAR-equipped production car at the time.

Now, at the latest Shanghai auto show, the number of electric vehicles (EVs) powered by LiDARs has reached dozens, as local EV makers have adopted the component over the past two years to help make vehicles more capable of assisted driving.

The ongoing Shanghai auto show began on April 18 and will run through April 27. EVs are certainly the focus of attention, with traditional fuel vehicles having fallen out of favor, a drastic change from two years ago.

More than 1,500 vehicles are on display at this year's edition of the show, with more than 150 of them making their debut, according to figures released by the event's organizers.

About two-thirds of those debuts were NEVs, including battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids.

Dozens of the NEVs at the show use the same new technology -- LiDARs -- despite the vehicles coming from different brands and having different designs.

Of all the models on display at the Shanghai auto show, 38 were equipped with LiDARs, with BYD-backed RoboSense, founded in 2014, being the biggest winner and the supplier for 18 of them.

Among BYD's models, the high-end Yangwang U8 off-road SUV and Denza N7 SUV are equipped with RoboSense's M Series LiDARs.

XPeng G6, which debuted at the Shanghai auto show, and the company's two flagship models, the P7i sedan and the G9 SUV, are also equipped with RoboSense's M Series LiDARs.

On April 14, 2021, XPeng unveiled the P5, the world's first LiDAR-equipped production car, on the eve of the last Shanghai auto show.

Notably, the P5 used LiDAR provided by Livox, incubated by drone maker DJI. However, XPeng switched to RoboSense's LiDARs for all subsequent models.

AITO, the EV brand jointly created by and Seres Group, also uses RoboSense's M Series LiDAR in the M5 SUV. Among other high-profile models, the Lotus Eletre, GAC Aion Hyper GT, Arcfox α-S with " Huawei Inside" are also equipped with RoboSense's LiDARs.

In addition to RoboSense, Innovusion and Hesai are the other two major players.

Among the vehicles on display at the Shanghai auto show, six NIO models -- the new ES8, ES7, new ES6, EC7, ET7 and ET5 -- are equipped with Innovusion's Falcon LiDARs.

Innovusion had a booth at the show and used an ET7 as a vehicle to showcase its product.

(NASDAQ: LI) currently has three models on sale -- Li L7, Li L8 and Li L9 -- all equipped with Hesai's AT128 LiDARs. HiPhi's HiPhi Z and HiPhi Y are also equipped with the component from Hesai.

For smart driving, vehicles need to detect their surroundings, and a single type of sensor often encounters scenarios that are not covered by its capabilities, a RoboSense source told CnEVPost.

The addition of LiDAR makes up for the weaknesses of other sensors, thus making the perception system capability more comprehensive and the smart driving decisions safer and more reasonable, the source said.

While the Shanghai auto show has just started, the next Beijing auto show is on its way.

The 17th Beijing International Automotive Exhibition (Auto China 2024) will be held from April 25 to May 4, 2024, marking the event's return after a four-year hiatus, according to an announcement made today by the event's organizers.

The auto show will be held at the China International Exhibition Center Shunyi New Venue in Beijing. Meanwhile, the parts show at the China International Exhibition Center Chaoyang Hall will be held from April 25-27.

The Beijing auto show, or Auto China, has been held in Beijing every two years since 1990.

The 17th Beijing auto show was originally scheduled for April 21 - April 30, 2022, but was canceled due to Covid concerns.

Prior to that, the 16th Beijing auto show was postponed to September 26 - October 5, 2020, due to Covid.

The theme of the 2024 Beijing auto show is "New Era, New Auto," the event's organizers said, adding, "We invite the global automotive and related industries to participate in the 2024 Beijing auto show."

Notably, the biennial Shanghai auto show began only three days ago, on April 18, and will run through April 27.

The show attracted more than 1,000 exhibitors with a total exhibition area of more than 360,000 square meters, opening 13 indoor halls at the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Shanghai, with passenger cars occupying nine of them.

NIO (NYSE: NIO) officially launched the 2023 ET7 and unveiled the new ES6 at the show, 's (NYSE: XPEV) new SUV G6 was unveiled, and BYD (OTCMKTS: BYDDY) also unveiled several new models.

NIO supplier Innovusion partners with Fuyao to put LiDAR behind windshield

Innovusion and Fuyao have begun joint research that has resulted in LiDAR integration behind the front windshield with less than 10 percent attenuation of detection performance.

The roof LiDAR setup has been complained by some to affect the aesthetics of the vehicle design. Now, local Chinese LiDAR manufacturers are working to put the component inside the vehicle.

NIO's LiDAR supplier Innovusion has partnered with local auto glass giant Fuyao Group to create LiDARs that can be mounted behind the front windshield, according to a press release yesterday.

There are currently two main mounting options for LiDAR, mounting it on top of the car like NIO's models, or placing the part next to the headlights as does.

Mounting LiDAR behind the front windshield, which does not affect the vehicle's exterior design and makes LiDAR less susceptible to the external environment, becomes one of the best options, Innovusion said.

However, the solution faces a number of technical challenges, including detection signal attenuation, noise from the LiDAR motor, and heat dissipation problems.

Through its innovation, Fuyao has been able to optimize the LiDAR's waveband transmittance, Innovusion said.

The initial collaboration between the two will be based on Innovusion's Robin-E, which has dimensions of 117 mm * 100 mm * 44 mm, a total weight of about 450 grams, less than 9 W of power consumption and less than 20 dB(A) of noise.

The two companies have started joint research and development and have already achieved LiDAR integration with the camera behind the front windshield, with detection performance attenuation of less than 10 percent, Innovusion said.

Founded in 2016, Innovusion has R&D centers in Silicon Valley, Suzhou and Shanghai, and LiDAR manufacturing sites in Ningbo and Suzhou.

On March 28, 2022, NIO delivered the first ET7 vehicles, marking the mass production of Innovusion's Falcon LiDAR product. ET7 and other newer NIO models are equipped with Innovusion's image-grade, ultra-long-range LiDAR Falcon.

Prior to Innovusion, Hesai (NASDAQ: HSAI) announced on April 14 a new LiDAR called the ET25, which it says is an in-cockpit LiDAR designed to be placed behind the front windshield.

The ET25 is an ultra-thin, long-range LiDAR, with the "ET" standing for Extremely Thin and the "25" referring to its height of just 25 mm.

Song L is based on BYD's e-Platform 3.0 and will have CTB (cell-to-body) technology, and intelligent electric four-wheel drive.

The model will have an electric rear wing, and electronic mirrors, giving it a more pronounced sporty character.

BYD announced last Friday on Weibo that Song L, the B-class all-electric SUV of the Dynasty series, will debut at the Shanghai auto show.

The rearview mirror replaces the traditional mirrors on either side of the vehicle with a camera, a forward-thinking design that promises lower wind resistance and longer range. Chinese regulations will allow the use of such mirrors on vehicles starting July 1.
